What would you do to get a summer job?

OK, I keep hearing how easy it is to get a summer job. If I can't get one I must be lazy. I've done 13 hour shifts as a kitchen porter. You can't get much worse than that so I'd do pretty much anything this summer.

What exactly should I be doing to get a job? Obviously all the websites are checked on a daily basis but they're very little use for summer work. Should I print out 30 CV's and throw them into half the shops Grafton street? Already done.

I'm finding it pretty impossible. I've had 2 interviews but no joy, not even a letter.

I'd just like to ask if you were 20 what would you be doing to get yourself one of these summer jobs?

How do you feel about working in hospitals as a care assistant?

You would have to help out around he ward you're allocated to and you would have to help out in jobs such as helping people wash themselves, get dressed and toileting them. I'm only telling you that part so you know what's involved.

It's great money tho!! You can apply to care assistant agencies.

I'd say first of all, don't tell them you're just looking for a summer job. Lots of employers don't want to bother training someone only to have them leave in a couple of months.
I too tried the handing cvs in everywhere last year and I had no replies! I'd say they just throw them away or else they get put to the bottom of the pile - because some of the shops then advertised for staff afterwards and I even got a temporary job in one of the places once I handed in an actual application form.

Why don't you try a supermarket? The pay is ok, the hours are very flexible and they're always looking for staff.
Or bar work? If they're desperate they won't care if you have experience or not!
Hotels and restaurants will probably be looking for staff too.

Also try asking for application forms in shops and look out for actual vacancies in places. I don't know about Dublin but I've seen plenty of jobs advertised here.

Get the manager of the place if its not a huge chain. Managers in these sorts of places usually hire on how well they like the looks of you.

Unfortunately you might have to be a little deceitful to get a summer job these days. Play down your education and make sure they believe you are in it for the long haul.

Does that mean changing my CV so it looks like I'm not in college and also I won't get a reference?

No...just make it sound like you're interested in keeping it on during college.

This is the first summer in 5 years I haven't had to look for a summer job... it's one of my pet hates.

I never got anywhere with websites, I think a lot of places prefer to see you in person. If you are applying to shops, they don't care if you got an A in Junior Cert History and came 3rd in the All-Ireland Tiddlywinks Championships, they want to know that you will be friendly and approachable to customers. Just keep going around shops etc.

Eugh i shudder at the thoughts of it. I'm not too keen on my job in a supermarket but I'd rather do a day there than a day in town handing out CVs.
