Thinking of contracting in IT

I'm thinking of leaving my job as a software engineer after 8 years with the same company. I don't want to look for a permanent position so thinking of contracting. Mostly worked on Windows platform - knowledge of windows architecture, .Net technologies(c#, vb.net, asp.net), some c/c++. Does anyone know if contracts are easy to pick up in this area and what are the average daily rates?

c#/.net - one of the most in-demand skillsets at the moment - so you should be able to get contracts with that much experience behind you yet.
Not sure what rates you could command - I'd like to think you'd get at least €40 an hour.
