I was talking to a mate of mine recently, he decided after many years of having Sky he no longer wanted it so phoned up and cancelled it. A day or two later he realised he would no longer have Sky Sports for an upcoming event he really wanted to watch so he called them back and explained that he might be interested in coming back:( .
"No problem" said the Sky agent, "as an incentive we'll give you the entire package for £15 for the first three months"
"Great", said my mate, "I'll take it":) That was xxx months ago, they've never taken the £15, he still has all the channels, his Sky box is not plugged into the phone so presumably they've no idea what he has been watching.
He reckons that because he cancelled and resubscribed in such a short time, the the finance department may have only cancelled his direct debit and not set up a new one:D
    Sweeeeeeeeet.........

Last May I subscribed to a Prem Plus season ticket for 06/07, gave my credit card details at the time, but no sign of any money being taken for months and months. Then last March a letter arrived telling me there was some error (of my doing of course, not theirs!!) and that I owed €70! So don't celebrate just yet...they'll get him, they always do!

They know what he CAN watch from their database. The phone line only needed for Pay per view / interactive ordering.

    He'll get billed.

Hes not too bothered, hes seen the event he wanted to see, if they try to retrospectively charge him he says he'll just deny all knowledge of the conversation where he 'alledgedly' re-subscribed. He has nothing in writing except his cancellation confirmation. As far as Sky are concered he'll tell them he sold his Sky box months ago and is quite happy with the aerial on his roof;)

I presume from a tech perspective that what they do is they have a big database that gets passed out through the signal consisting of something like:

    Card Number________Package A_______________Package B________Package C.......etc
    123 ____________ Yes Exp8/8/07 ______ Yes Exp8/8/07 ______ No
    124 __________________No _____________ Yes Exp8/10/07

    and a payment database

All they have to do is check what you have paid for and what you are getting, so they periodically reconcile the databases, any differences are flagged and the appropriate action taken.

They told me they had no record of any of my phone conversations with them when I tried to sign up for the free Sky+ offer last year:confused:
I had a guy on the phone while I filled in the online application (as the offer was only available online but there was some problem with the process) he said if I don't hear from them within a week call him back, when I did he had no recollection of the event (and no recording to refer to) about ten days after that when I phoned again nobody I spoke to had ever heard of him:eek: and likewise there were no records of our previous conversations. You don't honestly think they record every conversation? Of the ones they do record do you honestly think they keep them indefinately?
Perhaps they keep the complimentary or flattering ones but that would only be one or two;)

Besides a verbal agreement isn't worth the paper it isn't written on!

They do record all phone calls. Storage is cheap as chips and for data protection they need it. If your looking for something then they won't be able to find it, but vice versa they will have it. Don't forget that you are dealing with bored call centre workers when you call, not the backroom people.
