A user received 10000 out of office emails while she was on holidays.

Don't ask me how it happened but the emails are mixed with other mails.

Will I have to select big batches at a time and delete them manually while watching out for legitimate emails.

If your email app is Outlook Express or Outlook you could use the Rules Wizard to move these mails to a new folder and then delete the folder.

if it's exchange email, get on to your local admins, they should be able to sort it out for them in the event that you're unable to do it by rules like shayser suggests.

if it's pop email, then there's 2 main options. the first is a complete purge, but you probably don't want that. if you do, then log in with their email address and password to www.mail2web.com and you can delete everything from there individually (not practical with such large numbers) or all at once. it's simple enough to use. also very handy if someone is on dialup and they have a big attachment blocking their mails from coming in.

the other option is mailwasher from www.mailwasher.net.

download the app, import the mail settings from outlook (there's a wizard) and let it download the headers for all the emails (a fast connection will help here) then you can sort by name, date, subject or whatever you need to to be able to see whats what.

add all the legit people to your 'friends list' and then check through all the ones you want to get rid of, you can select a batch and choose delete, or even bounce spam mails or mails from anyone who you want tot hink your email doesn't exist and then set it going.

Ah yes the auld out of office email loop, if your in IT you would want to be very careful about them. A similar incident brought our mail server down two weeks ago. Anyway as to your original query could you not have sorted the emails by name and deleted accordingly?

I think that would have been the answer I would have came up with you know if I had got a good nights sleep last night. :)

Is it common? What causes it? Somehow it manages to send an email to itself and then keeps replying to the emails it recieves saying that your out of office? How does the first one get sent?

Well in our case it was to do with our helpdesk support software. I have'nt looked into it yet though.
