Is flying not an option? Anyway, there seems to be more trains from Pembroke than Fishguard.

...But there are more ferries to Fishguard.

It's irrelevant really as there are only a few that actually connect.

The 2 stena ferry sailings in each direction (9am, 9.15pm from Rosslare and 2.45am, 2.30pm from Fishguard ) have proper train connections. There are no train connections for any of the the stena express sailings.

    Times and fares here. http://www.stenaline.ie/stena_line/stena_line_ireland/rosslare-fishguard/gb/by_rail.html

It is much cheaper to get the combined ship/train tickets than to buy each seperately, they can be bought at the port, they don't need to be bought in advance.

Pembroke Dock train station is not right beside the ferry, AFAIR it is about a 15min walk. There is a train connection for the 08.30 ferry from Rosslare but it is only 30mns so it could be a bit tight. There is also a connection to the 14.30 ferry from Pembroke. In both cases the overall journey is slower than via Fishguard and AFAIK there are no through tickets for the Pembroke route.

There is no train connections to/from the overnight ferry at Pembroke.

there is a BusEireann/Eurolines coach service on the overnight Stena ferry but it stops at a motorway service area several miles outside Cardiff so would only be of use if someone in a car could meet you.

I've never taken the ferry across - though my brother used to get the Swansea-Cork ferry when he was coming home from Cardiff (in the days before cheap flights). I visit there 3-4 times a year, usually flying into Bristol and then getting the flyer bus connection from Bristol airport to Temple Meads (£5-7) and the train on to Cardiff Central (~£10).

Yeah - it's a pain in the a$$ that Ryanair pulled out of Cardiff - I used get the train to Dublin and fly direct. You should be able to get a cheap flight into Bristol and it's pretty hastle free getting from there to Cardiff... just make sure the flight back from Bristol isn't too early though...
