USB enclosed Maxtor HDD

When I plug a Maxtor HDD in a USB enclosure into a Windows Server 2003 machine it does not automatically install. I didn't have this problem with the same device in XP or 2k Server. Would it be looking for the hard disk driver or a usb driver? It's marked yellow as a USB device in device manager. A pen drive works fine in the same port.

Went looking for a hdd driver but can't find one. It's a Maxtor 5A300J0.

Maxtors / Seagate site has a few tools and drivers you can try.

Thanks Hal1, but there are no drivers that I can see on the Seagate website for this drive. Can't find any on google either.

happened with my enclosure and disk management showed it as a RAW partition on the drive

It's not showing in disk management at all. It's in device manager under Other Devices (yellow question mark) and then USB Device (yellow exclamation mark). This makes me wonder if it's a USB problem, but then again my pen drive worked fine in this USB port.

Are you supplying the Maxtor with external power?

    Yes. I've got front LEDs.

As you said, your pen drive works in the same port?

Have you tried changing the USB lead on the Maxtor?

Or a least try it on another PC (if you can) to eliminate the USB port on your machine as being the culprit. That drive draws a lot more power then a pen drive!
