I'm after something to play AVI files as windows media player doesn't seem to like them. Is there anything reliable out there that's free and doesn't contain nasties?

Simple just use VLC player. It can play nearly every format out there. You can get it over there

Windows media player usually plays .avi files.

Your file might have been encoded for the divx codec, so best bet is to try that first. you'll find it easily with google.

If that doesn't work try using VLC player, that plays most stuff.
If that doesn't work either, there are programs which tell you how an AVI has been encoded, I'll have a look for one if you post back here.

I use mediaplayer classic... but the normal WMP should work with everything as long as you have the right codecs installed for what you're trying to watch.

You can usually right-click the avi and go into the properties to see what codec it's compressed with.

I want to avoid getting into the specifics about how AVI is just a container format and the actual video and audio streams are determined by the encoding process used, but I can't. Sorry.

I second Media Player Classic, and if things still don't play try ffdshow as well.

Get the Klite Codec pack & install it. You windows media player will probably work fine then....
