Good news and bad news time. First, the good: it's confirmed that the 80 GB PS3 does exist and will be available for sale on June 16, priced at KWR 518,000 (about US$558). The bad news: there are currently no plans to release the new version to European shores - this little tidbit of misery confirmed by a spokesman from the big Sony Computer Entertainment Europe itself.

Feeling left out? Don't be. Although Korea WILL be getting the PS3s with the 80GB hard drive, it's the only version that's going to be released there - no 20GB or 60GB PlayStation 3 joy for them.

And if you still feel you're missing out, the spokesperson personally reassured that despite the extra space, there's nothing to distinguish the Korean PS3 from the European PS3. His statement, verbatim:

"The chassis of the 80GB Korean PlayStation 3 is identical to the chassis of the European version. The only exception is the larger hard drive."

Well, maybe it's not really bad news. 20 extra gigabytes (60 if you have the 20GB PlayStation 3) isn't all that much to get high-strung about. Still, we'd like to hear what you think - you know the drill. Updates as we get them!

Dunno what sony are playing tbh

You know you can put any laptop hard drive in it anyways? So who gives a toss about it?

Because they get 20gb extra for €200 cheaper?

    Plus proper backwards compatibility.

Actually no, they've removed the emotion engine chip from these models.

And I wonder how the average wage in Korea compares with that in Ireland. Or how much their big macs are compared to ours.

Fact is it doesn't effect us, unless you can find a way to import and save yourself some cash.

There's no way they could release that here. People aren't paying €629 for the 'standard' model, so there's no way they'll pay €700 plus for an 80gb version.

Its the same price as the 60gb.

They will replace the 60GB with this when they have sold through their existing inventory, I have no doubt (at the same price). It would cost Sony no less, or perhaps even more, to make 60GB SKUs from here on out.

Whether you consider this being shafted or not depends on whether you think delaying the European launch until now, like the Korean launch, would also have been shafting us. Something makes me think most would have preferred to get the system earlier.

I think it would be nice if this came here around September/October along with a pricecut.

To everyone saying what's the big deal with having 80gb, I'd ask
you to come back and stick to your opinions when you've got
59GB on your 60GB drive. It's only a matter of time.

Cheers Sony! Suppose we should be used to them shafting us EMEA
    based owners by now.
