Re: Engineer, thinking of moving to Council Well, i've decided, having weighed up all the pros and cons to take the job in the Council. I feel there are too many benefits for me to turn it down, such as:

    less working hours per day/week
    more holidays per year
less stress (although i like a dynamic environment)
    possibilities of career break
defined benefit pension (biggest factor for me)
    extra pay..

I've been told thjat initially i will be placed in the Road Design section. Does anybody have any experience of the type of work carried out in these sections of local authorities?

Roads planning is a nice area to work in. I used to work there myself about 3 1/2 years ago. There is good variety in the work alos so you wont be tied to the desk all day. It also has the element of job security.

what type of work exactly did you have to do?

    was there road design involved?

did u have to check road sight distances for planning applications?

Mostly involved planning for estates and vetting sites that applied for planning permission to see if they met the criteria eg sightlines and that sort of stuff.
