A mate of mine is coming to Ireland for a month. He'll need a car from late May - late June and he'll need to be able to drive it to the north. Anybody got any good recommendations for someone cheapish?

where is he comming from ?
does he has a full license ?

I got from budget rental and it was nice. Also worth mentioning what sort of car he wants to rent ?

Yeah he has a full Irish license. Type of car isn't too important. Small 4 door would probably be OK.

    Try

    https://www.kemwel.com/index.cfm?aff=KEMWEL
    https://www.kemwel.com/booking/car.cfm?CreditedAgency=A1633261
    http://www.novacarhire.com/car-hire/Ireland/

Try US web site as they will charge price in US dollors so you might get cheaper as compared to euro.
    like www.kayak.com

Also I have this web site you can use to get car hire vouchers in US.

    Hi,

    I recently hired a car for a month. Here's a few pointers;

Cheapest I found was irish car rentals. Hired it at the airport. Not bad if you don't mind driving a Kia ! They do have focus' etc on the site, but they're never avaliable.

I originally hired for 2 weeks. Then called up to extend. At the airport they gave me an upgrade for the same price as the smaller car Thing is, when I rang up to extend they charged me the full rate for the bigger car (even when they said it would be the same price). I caught them, and no problems getting a big discount and an apology.

Ask for a discount if it's for a month.

If you hire a car at an airport, you have to pay an additional tax.

Ask for cross border. Irish car rentals had no problems with this. Whoever you go for, ask in advance if there's gonna be an issue.

Once you find a car hire place, book with their online service. Much cheaper this way.

If you book online, wait for your receipt. I made the mistake of not doing this once, and the booking company changed the car hire place (it was one website who dealt with a load of companies). So I turn up at the airport, not knowing the hire company had changed. No-one at the desk I thought i had to go to!! Had to pay the charges anyway.

Fill up the car before you return it. Cheaper to bring the car back full of petrol than having them charge your card for the amount (theres a handling charge)....

    Have a good trip...

    I definitely second this.
I was in the US a while ago and my boss booked the smallest cheapest car online. They didn't have it at the airport so they upgraded me to some 4X4 thing. I wanted to keep it for a couple more days but couldn't extend it as it was on my bosses CC. So I went to the office and asked them for their smallest cheapest car. The smallest they had was some huge crappy Ford Tauras with GPS (which I had to pay extra for even though I didn't want it). It cost me the same for 2 days with that as it had cost for the 5 days for the 4X4.
