    From here

PC will launch its long-awaited personal video recorder (PVR) this July, siliconrepublic.com has learned. It finally will give the cable TV operator a competing technology to the service offered by its rival Sky. A personal video recorder (PVR), also referred to as a digital video recorder, can record live TV for playback when the user wants.

The technology is integrated into the set-top box required for digital TV, so consumers don’t need to program their video recorders or DVD recorders. PVRs can be programmed to record entire series.

The box, manufactured by French firm Thomson, will have a storage capacity of up to 160GB and will be able to hold around 80 hours of saved TV. UPC sales and marketing director Mark Coan confirmed it will be launched in Ireland this July.

The service is currently being trialed in Dublin but it won’t be commercially available for another two months. “We want to make sure the service is right,” Coan told siliconrepublic.com. “It’s going to be aggressively priced,” he added.

I was wrong then, I thought they were going with Scientific Atlanta .

On a related note, Sky on friday last
said that they dropped the £10 a month supplementary sub for sky+ for their subscribers in the UK , see

Very true. The EPG is poor and not kept up to date (plus it only works for a few hours ahead).

It used to be fine but the last couple of years it only ever seemed to go to 1am the following day

Just got Sky+ installed on Friday, signed up for 12 months and gave my notice to UPC, timing like this always happens to me, light up a cigarette and the bus comes, finish rubbing in my sun block and it starts to rain...ah well....maybe I brought about the date for the rest of yiz in the grand scheme of things....very happy with Sky+ though, love it.

Ahem didn't I already tell you I tested the Thomson box months ago and was slagged off when it was announced it was going to be manufactured by scientific atlanta.

However I personally think that regardless of who make's it, I think UPC are doing the right thing holding the box back from commerical usage until all system s have been tested and the software issues resolved.

What difference does it make to us whether they are or not, as they supply all their own equipment.

Well I can confirm the following .

    1. There will not be a proper 7 day epg covering the entire bouquet of subscribed channels available to all UPC Cable customers by July.
    2. there will not be a PVR product, be it scientific atlanta or thomson ...or meccano or lego available to all UPC cable customers by July (and probably never for MMDS customers )

lets make that end July to be as fair as possible to UPC
