Is it just me or is radio gone to the absolute dogs and sold out to the point where it's almost like listening to constant info-mercials?

spin 103: some generic R'n'B crap or some yank talkin **** in an annoying accent

fm104: adds/the red hot chilli peppers

today fm: up its on arse apart from tom dunne, way too many adds

    98 fm: air pollution

phantom fm: sometimes decent although traffic reports/news every 30 seconds

newstalk: also decent sometimes, moncrieff very good. naturally no music though so doesn't give an option in that field if you're in the mood

Q102: Way too Phil Collinsy and middle-aged

I spend hours on end flicking, switching, tuning and it's rare that I find something worth listening to.

    Anyone agree?

yes. Unequivically yes. Tom Dunne is the only DJ i can listen too...Ray foley makes my ears hurt, and i occasionally have the misfortune to be listening to 98fm in my brothers car...why can't we have a K-Billy's super sounds of the 70s?

Don't forget Ocean FM, biggest load of rubbish going.
Thats why I bought my internet radio.

Never listen to Ocean FM myself either. That said, I didn't like its predecessor NWR either, and it's seldom that I'd listen to Highland.

Ocean were meant to be completely different to NWR and won the licence on that basis, but I find them worse to be honest.

The only thing I listen to now on the radio is Alice Cooper on Today FM on Saturday evenings. Everything else is shíte.

I've started listening to Virgin Radio on the internet. Far better than the crap on Irish stations. It can be picked up on 1215AM aswell, but the sound quality is crap.

alice cooper's show is very good but unfortunatley its on at prime boozin time on a saturday so rarely get to hear it

just following up on the many many traffic reports on radio these days......does anyone actually listen to them/think they're useful? Apart from reporting major incidents and crashes i just don't the point! It's the same every day!!

The traffic reports that Anna Livia do are live , early morning and early evening, and are excellent with some great music as well, but Dublin only.

Doesn't Anna Livia have a heavy metal show on one of the nights or something?

Yeah, I think it's 12-2 thursday night. I could be totally wrong though :)

forgot to mention Donal Dineen as a super jock, great great music....a bit too 'out there' sometimes when he loses the run of himself but overall excellent

pity he's only given the graveyard shift of 12-2am. Nice when going to sleep though

That fact he was once at 9 pm till midnight tells its own story about Today FM though.

In terms of music I find Donal Dineen one of the few DJs really worth listening to at the moment because he actually gives me new music that I have never heard before, the majority of stations are so frightened of offending their audience they stick to a playlist so rigidly its unreal and I applaud Phantom for at least trying to break that mould regardless of how poorly the station sounds apart from the music

Or maybe we're all getting old and cranky and thinking that the music that the kids are listening to is sh*te

the music kids listen to IS ****e

I figured that out when I was a kid

I'm 15 and I agree that the chart music for the last few years has been ****e.

I'd say most weeks at least 35 of the top 40 tracks are a load of crap.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 78 ✭✭Captain Smiggy

Second that. Donál Dineen is indeed a little animal. Great actual DJ as well, saw him live a while ago....Don't honestly see the point in Alice Cooper being a DJ, mush like Dylan on BBC's radio1(or is it 2?), it seems a little superfluous. I mean, Something happens were never really that big, but Tom Dunne is a great DJ.

Personally think the Alice Cooper show is a load of crap.

Agree about Tom Dunne, though - while I can take or leave his own show, he's proven himself beyond doubt when filling in on the mainstream shows.

Whether or not he'd be happy to do that as a regular slot is another thing, but at least he'd be more likely to play the originals like SuperTramp instead of the samples crap like Gym Class Heroes......

Some of the ****e in the charts makes me think of "the emperors new clothes"......the Rays (Darcy & Foley) play a rake of it without comment and then slag off stuff that's miles better (and given the current state of what's in the charts, that includes Dervish or Donna & Joe)

    98 fm: air pollution

... by means of probably the tiniest music archive in Dublin/Europe/the World. Ever heard about of the difference between heavy rotation and songs NOT on heavy rotation?

There are certainly good individual programs out there on Irish radio but no one station stands out as brilliant all round.

I'm into talk radio so as Irish radio stations go Newstalk is the best overall with RTÉ1 coming second and the Sunday Supplement and Business shows on today FM meriting a mention.

I live in England so I have BBC5 Live and BBC4 to listen to. These stations do great talk radio in the morning and BBC4 is great at night.

As for music, I can't stand 90% of the top 40 chart tunes played and there isn't a huge amount of good metal or trad Irish on at convenient times for me.
