Alright I'm working on my old computer. I haven'y youched the thing in about two months. Whenever I turn it on though the monitor has a little box saying that it's not at optimal mode recommended mode 1280 * 1024 60hz. Obviously the last time I used it I changed the settings but I can't change them back because I can't see the desktop. This happens the moment I turn on the computer. Any help people? The monitor is a samsung syncmaster 913n.

is it xp? start it up and tap F8 just after the keyboard test. should get you into safe mode which should come up with lowest res..

edit: actually thinking about it F8 should give you a 'vga mode' option too, which will start up windows normally but reset the resolution to VGA. This is probably the best way, you can then up it to sxga.

Yeah it's XP sorry should hve said that. When it starts up I hear a beep which I'm pretty sure is the last good configuration thing. I just hit enter to get by this. I tried hitting F8 after this and the monitor still displays the message. It's taking a good bit longer to start up which suggests it is going into safe mode but should not have started displaying 800 * 640 straight away?

edit: after a few minutes I heard a beep which means I got to the password screen. It's still displaying that message. Should the fact that the last known good configuration screen is coming up stop it from going in to safe mode? Also the monitor displays the message the moment I turn on my computer so I am completely blind here.

Since it's always displaying that, even at POST (according to what you say), it's not a problem with Windows. Either something's not plugged in right, your graphics card is loose or dead, or there's something wrong somewhere else.
