BBC One doesn't have a HD varient. The BBC only run the BBC HD trial (Ch 145) at the minute.

Yes. 21st November 2007 is the key date.

In short, the BBC Trust are stress testing the public service value of a permanent BBC HD channel. Announcement in November.

I thought you can tune in the BBC HD trial manually on a Sky HD box?

The BBC has produced a 9 page report on their HD plans. Details that caught my attention :

The BBC is seeking approval to provide a service of nine hours per day, 15:00 to midnight, with some flexibility to extend beyond this to allow for the coverage of significant live sport or other events. At launch, the channel would offer a schedule of three to four hours per day, building to nine hours in late 2008.

    timescales
upto November 2007 >> Public Value Test
November 2007 >> On satellite, converting the existing trial into an ongoing service (7pm-11pm)
Late 2008 >> Extend hours to 9 hours per day (3pm-midnight)

By the time the full nine-hour schedule is achieved, content would come from across the BBC’s portfolio of television channels. Approximately half the content would come from BBC One, 30 per cent from BBC Two and the rest from BBC Three, BBC Four, CBBC and CBeebies. The aim is for the bulk of the peak time schedule to be simulcast BBC One programmes. Programmes from BBC Two would be simulcast where the schedule allows.

There is an example pdf schedule for
    the 4 hour launch channel (7pm-11pm) - page 5
    the 9 hour channel (3pm-midnight) - page 6

Stupid newbie question.... can I get a FTA HD receiver/tuner box or do I have to get Sky to access BBC HD?

You don't need Sky hardware to view BBC HD.

The FTA HD receiver will do the trick.

Personally I am holding out a little longer. As this HD becomes more popular, a receiver should become more reasonably priced.

I'm hoping the BBC/ITV Freesat box is either HD, or there is an HD version of it. The main issues for me are not the receiver or Bluray player, but lack of HD Content (TV and cheap BD films) and a decent affordable HD screen that can properly display 1080i25 on 1080 lines without having to rescale or frame rate convert. I don't mind if it is 1200 line screen with a black border in TV mode.

Thanks lads. So I take it that there's no reasonably priced HD receiver already on the market then? What kind of prices are we talking about?

I think they will, currently the FTA HD we stock is 299, I'm hoping in time it will come down in price.

i'd wait a couple of months yet. I think Technomate will eventually get theirs out by then, as for the dreambox 8000 wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

Humax have a reasonably priced reciver.
The Sky HD if you want Pay TV is not unreasonable for a PVR.
Reelbox Avantguard is expensive but does everything.

It's still 3,000 ish for a decent HD screen, and not much to watch.

What are your updated opinions on this lads? So the BBC HD signal is becoming permanent and I'm getting a HDTV this week. Now I'd like to know what type of FTA box I need to receive BBC HD? Humax? Technomate? Pace? Recommendations please.

You may want to get the BBC/ITV box in March, as it will hev interactive & EPG.

Hi ,I had a quick search but could not find the answer to my question which has probably been asked a thousand times......Now that BBC HD has completed testing will Sky put this on to the EPG with the rest of the HD channels ( Luxe tv HD was the latest arrival a few days ago).I rang and e-mailed SKY but the people I dealt with didn't have a clue:mad:

Dr Dish TV did a nice review on the Vantage HD7100. Price seemed reasonable too. But, a Google on it, produces only German results.

If Sky add it for Ireland they have to pay BBC.

BBC only pays for EPG listings for UK.

I notice the other day though that BBC seems to have a lot pay channels for Poland on Hotbird.

I'm still confused. In order for SKY to "get off the ground" in Ireland ,they had to have BBCI and 2 and Channel 4 i.e. premium channels on the EPG.People were just not interested without them.Surely the same argument applies to SKY HD i.e. they have to get BBC HD on the EPG or it won't be the success they are hoping for.Access on "other channels" is not good enough because you can't record on to the hard drive ,live pause, rewind etc, etc.
I'm going to be very upset if I can't see BBC H.D.

The UK Freesat website is up and running - not sure if I'm allowed to link to it here, so I won't, but it's an obvious enough address.

Why wouldn't you be allowed to link to it?

A tiny proportion of people have real HD sets and Sky HD. Be sure that is there is a major value to Sky, they will pay BBC for EPG. But up till now it has only been a trail, so it is early days yet. See what happens when BBC/ITV Freesat launches in Spring 2008

Probably stupid questions but (a) will you be able to get just the box on it's own. The FAQ talks about a one off cost which is inclusive of sat dish and installation. (b) will you be able to get it in the ROI? The FAQ talks about 'almost every household in the UK' (b) will you be able to 'tune into' any channel you want like a normal sat receiver? The FAQ talks about 80 pre-selected channels.

With all that in mind why go for Freesat at all when, presumably, an 'open' HD receiver will do all the above and more?

Its not clear yet but we will know when boxes go on sale.
