Just read PC World's review of Kaspersky AV 6.0. They rated it their best buy. Has anyone ever actually used this anti-virus programme? What's good about it? What's not?

don't know if eugene kaspersky has much say in the development of the ALL kaspersky software,i'm sure he does in av-scanner atleast, but he is or atleast was in the past, regarded by experienced virus writers as the best in the field.
why is this i have wondered?

it could be partly due to particular virus writers knowing him personally, because of working in the same industry. ;) AND secretly knowing his past in virus writing, perhaps admiring his skills before he started working on AVP and departing to create kaspersky based on his av-engine.

i know there is the whole conspiracy theory of av industry writing viruses or malware in order to keep demand for their products.

i believe this to be partly true, in the past, because if you look at virus e-zines, you'll notice disassemblies of viruses found in the wild, very detailed comments of their inner workings...this is something an av-employee would be expected to do as part of their job.

of course ..including some comments by virus writers, hints, clues here and there..most definitely, 99% of original av-developers were previous virus writers, or even writing viruses while writing av scanners at the same time.

benny from 29a works for zoner AV scanner as one of main developers, ratter i think works in that area too.i read of griyo writing his own av-scanner as long ago as 7 years..so it would be no surprise to me if griyo works for av-company.

i heard mental driller works at microsoft, and you can see the "hotpatching" feature which is now common, is actually an old virus technique known as "splicing"

don't get me wrong, i'm not saying av-company employees wrote viruses to make money, but that was inevitable anyway..it was just something they liked to do i guess.

i honestly can't say what virus scanner is best, but kaspersky is very respected by oldskool virus writers..no certainty why though.

I've been using Kaspersky for years, before then I had tried so many anti-virus programs trying to find the best. The reason why Kaspersky is the best, and acknowledged by most people within the PC Security community is the fact that it detects practically every piece of malware, it uses a heuristic engine that helps it catches new strains of viruses/malware before any other programs.

It also scans for some of the tougher pieces of malware that most anti-virus programs leave out, like vundo, wareout, and smitfraud.

If you want the best, then Kaspersky is it.

Having been battling with Vundo and virtumonde for 10days now - Kaspersky is the only thing that has returned my Machine to a working state. - I was also runnning Spybot S+D - Ad-Aware and Blackice - Network Ice and AVG free AV - None of these were able to deal with Virtumonde.....

previously explorer.exe was crashing and relaunching about once every 4 seconds. dwnldd the trial of ksprsky- All my troubles seem to be cured. Hurray for Kaspersky

hey meccanoman303, you should run HijackThis just to make sure all traces of Vundo are off your pc. This is how

Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:

    HijackThis_sfx download

    Save HijackThis_sfx to your desktop.

Double-click the file then click the Unzip button. Then close the Self-Extractor window.

Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe to run it. If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessable, right click HijackThis.exe and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

Please run the extracted HijackThis.exe from now on. Delete any copies of HijackThis.zip that you have saved.

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file. Copy the entire contents of that log and post it here

Been using Kaspersky for years and have Ver 6 rolled out to all the workstations at work.

Works very well, although i find the anti spam very slow.

Very impressed with the pro-active defence which has caught some brand new viruses prior to the signature being updated.

Is it true that you can only get the VISTA compatible version as an online download?

Compared to other AV programmes, how big a drain is it on your system?

The new system is more of a resource hog than previous versions but not nearly as bad as Norton and most of the other big names and not a problem if you are only running the anti virus parts.

I have it running on machines with only 256mb of Ram.

Version 6 is fully Vista compatible but i have never seen it for sale anywhere but online.

Went to a huge electronics retailer called Fry's in OC of So Cal yesterday. They had version 6.0 on CD, but it was not Vista compatible. Will have to check online versions.
