An Island of Rabbits

Given the title of the final episode of series 3 - The Looking Glass - and the numberous references to rabbits and Alice in Wonderland, I think it would be interesting to discuss whether this has any bearing on the overall plot of the series.

    Just to jog the mind.

Series 1 had a episode called "White Rabbit" in which Jack chased the image of his dead father. Inthe episode Locke saves jack from a cliff and refers to Jacks quest to find his father as "chasing the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland".

Both Boone and Sawyer have read Watership Down either just before or while on the island - obviously a book with many rabbit references.

Ben is famous for his white rabiit and it has appeared in many episodes.

Alex has been seen skinning a white rabbit.

In the book "Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll, Alice goes through a mirror and everything seems backward. Even time! She spends the book playing a chess game (Black v White). She encounters a white rabbit as she did in Alice in Wonderland.

Sawyer reads Of Mice and Men in one of the ealier episodes and this has many rabbit references.

The Dharma symol for the Looking Glass is a white rabbit.

...and Sawyer and Kate are now riding like rabbits.

    I see your point. :)

Well apparently the rabbit is a symbol for fertility. Another theme on the island

Are they the same thing? Through the looking glass is the book, alice in wonderland is the disney version, I could be wrong but thats what I thought.

But i agree that there are number of references to alice and the rabbit, but I also think that is books in general. The wizard of oz was mentioned last week, the man behind the curtain being the wizard. Sawyer has read a number of books, (one of which was irish and was written years ago, when it featured it went back into print and sales soared)

Never thought of the rabbits in Of Mice & Men

Nope, Through the Looking Glass is the sequel to Alice in Wonderland.

That was Desmond that read that, "The Third Policeman" by Flann O'Brien.

That book was apparently picked for a very specific reason, but it's about somebody whose life gets very very weird and then
he discovers he's been dead for about 18 years (theory's already been discredited), but it only seemed like about 2 days for him. There is also a "magic box" which can produce anything you want it to featured in the book.

I'd reccommend the book to everyone, it's hilarious, yet very very annoying, and the end comes as a shock if it hasn't been spoiled by some bastard on an internet forum (:o)

Also, I read it before it was "cool" to ;)

just begging to become a trilogy. ;)

there's lots of rabbit references alright, but then there's lots of references to lots of things. every episode i watch (that'll be every single one to date) i realise more and more that almost nothing is meaningless. i can only imagine they have a big database somewhere cataloging every little thing for later use.

i know a lot of people who were avid fans in the beginning but who didn't stick with it and i'm really glad now after seeing the last few episodes (inc. the looking glass last night) that i stuck with it as it's really paying off now.

i guess they knew they were losing figures and had to do something to boost the ratings. it's just a shame they lost so many people in the middle.

So they're all characters in a book being dreamed by a little blonde girl?

    I wouldn't be surprised.

Sorry, I wasn't thinking straight. I was mixing up the fact that there are two books and the fact that they often appear as a single film, with the shortened title Alice in wonderland. Disneys film contained alot of sections for through the looking glass i believe

I imagine its a reference to the rabbit in alice in wonderland,
    he wore a watch
he was late for a very important date

For some reason, I read that as a euphemism.

Theories aside, I'd say they'd have a hard time condensing Lost into 30 seconds for a bunny re-enactment :p

In Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass Alice says to the Queen:
"I can’t remember things before they happen"

    And the Queen replies:
"It’s a poor sort of memory that only works backwards",

This quote reminds me of Desmond's type of memory, ie. works backwards and forward.
