    hi folks,

i've have been thinking of getting a bike/scooter to commute from greystones to town.

i've never ridden a bike (except for the 50cc scooters on holiday).. but i'm 33 and have a full 'B' licence, so would be probably be going for a provisional licence and something easy to ride (initially).

Q1: please can you give me some idea as to what would be a good commuter for the 40 mile round trip each day?

Q2: should i go for a 125 scooter or a proper bike? Is a 125 enough for daily motorway use?

Q3: Recommend any decent bike shops i should be visiting?

    thanks in advance...

For a 40 mile trip every day I would say get a proper bike. Apply for your A licence and get a 125 or a 250 cc machine. Plenty to choose from. I dont know where you are so I couldn't recommend any shops.

    cheers nialler,

i am down in greystones.. dont mind where i get a bike from, as long as it's a decent machine for a decent price... knowing nothing about bikes doesnt help. :)

the route i'd take involves about 19 miles , about 10 miles motorway and 9 miles heavy traffic on the N11...

know anything about the Dragstar? are they capable of motorway use?

you can't go on a motorway on a provisional licence. And going on a bike with no experience is very dangerous.

I recommend you get lessons first.

I started with a moped to get used to being on a road but it's not necessarily the best option as you will get into scrapes because of your lack of speed.

You can get away with doing that commute on a small bike/big moped but for more comfort, I would get a bike.

They are more stable when you are on the open road, and are generally more comfortable.

What price range have you in mind? You are not limited by bike size or engine capacity, just power output.

If you want a "big" bike for small bike insurance you have to go Factory Restricted. If you go "normal" restricted, then the insurance of whatever category the bike is in applies.
