ok so the story goes. I have two weeks to go on a holiday. Kinda restricted as to where we can go coz there is a kid coming too. I reckon all the European holiday destinations are the same - beach, apartment block, pool, bar street with restaurants etc etc. Im not really into it but thats the way it's gotta be. Can anyone recommend somewhere that has all that but has access to other interesting cultural stuff too? was thinking Italy coz you could possibly head off to Rome for a day or something but it's mad expensive. Anyone ever do it on the cheap and how? where is a good place to stay?? or anyone got any good suggestions of somewhere else to go? thanks a mil

I would go for Sicily or Malta. Malta is much more expensive than Sicily though.

Sicilian food is glorious.:D Check this out :

My girlfriend & I went to Rhodes last August & were really impressed as like you we wanted more than the usual. Well we got it & for only 500 euro each too....I remember we only spent one day on the beach to get a rest from all the unbelievable history of the place! we rented a car one day and visited lindos to see the oldest acropolis (spelling) in the world, which was stunning & stoped off at a lovely beech on the way called tsampika which was great cause it didnt have any development around it. Then another day we rented a scooter and went down the west coast to an abandoned ancent city. The old town of rhodes is stunning, from the intimidating town walls to the palace of the grand master. The history goes from ancient greece to the crusades, byzantine, italian back to greece. We stayed in ilyssion hotel in Ialyssos, which is great base to see everything and not as mad as some of the other resorts. Couldnt recommed it highly enough only thing is you would need two weeks ideally because we did nearly everything in one and it would off been at a more relaxed pace had we two weeks!

Forgot to mention it's really cheap too & it's where one of the wonders of the ancient world once stood at the gates of the harbour in rhodes town the Collossus of Rhodes.
