Looking for an electronic drumkit

    Hey,

I'm looking for some recommendations on an electronic drumkit. I've been sniffing around e-bay and Thomann, but so far, I haven't found anything that has really grabbed my attention.

My motivation in all of this is just to play drums - I'm not really interested in recording / playback features, preset loops, or a database of backing tracks. What I want is something portable, with volume control, and that will take a bit of enthusiastic bashing without breaking. My budget runs up to about 500 Euros.

I've looked at the following kit on Thomann, but there's something about the Millenium brand that seems to suggest 'cheap crap', although I've had some good experiences with cymbal stands and stuff from them before.

I've also looked at the following item on ebay. It seems to have cut out a lot of the features that I didn't want, but again, I'm unsure of the quality of the brand.

If anybody has any recommendations, they'd be much appreciated.

    Angry.

    Mr Angry,
Ever thought of DIY? There are several internet sites that contain the plans etc (VDRUMS.Com, edrumming.com, edrum.com and look under the diy sections). If you find a complete cheapo acoustic kit with cymbals, snaffle a drum module from Roland, Yamaha or Alesis on Ebay and build a few simple triggers then you can be away for a fraction of the price. Takes a bit of time and research but if this dullard can do it anyone can. If you want to get up and running as quick as poss then buy a complete kit from Thomann (the millenium doesn't have the greatest respect in the e-drumming posts I have read). You could do worse than getting a 2nd hand Roland TD3 or TD6 kit just to see if you are going to stick with it. Buyandsell occasionally have them up for sale but ebay always does. You have to be quite careful about sales on ebay though cos roland stuff is regularly getting targetted by the fraud brigade over on ebay. Just follow the normal procedures for bidding.
ALWAYS do a lot of research before committing to a kit though since Roland update their specs on kits (eg TD6V is newer than the TD6). The above sites are great guides when decision making.

I ended up going for the Alesis DM5:

I ended up paying £320 on e-bay for it, so it was a little over my expected budget, but all-in-all, I'd call it a very satisfactory purchase. The dynamic articulation is a real bonus, although the lack of different sounds when striking different parts of the cymbal is a little irritating. Nevertheless, the pre-programmed effects are cool, its a lot easier to fit into my bedroom, a lot easier to get around, and the neighbours haven't complained yet! (Nor are they likely to).

I haven't ever played another electronic kit, so I can't really make an accurate comparison against similar products. Its not the same feeling as playing a normal kit, but it does the job as a practise kit nicely, and its fun to mess around with. If thats what you're looking for, then I'd recommend it highly.
