SKY - Channel 4 - ROI

Twice in so many weeks, I have sat down to watch a movie on Channel 4 only to discover a message to say SKY are not broadcasting this film in the ROI???

    Why is this?

I pay sky for a package that includes Channel 4, (God knows they went on about it enough in their marketing), and they decide to just disable it during prime time presentations!

    :(

As far as I know it's because C4 would have to pay more for the movie if they were to broadcast it in Ireland, but they don't want to pay more so it's not shown. Only C4's home produced shows get shown here, and anything they don't have to pay extra for. You'll probably find a lot of imported shows/movies won't be shown.

Ya, there's a few films and programmes that Channel 4 don't have the Irish rights to (i think that channel 6 might have the rights of most of the tv shows)

There has been plenty of posts over in the satellite forum...

The satellite and Broadcasting fora both have discussions and explanations on all of this as well as speculation on what the future holds. It is a pity and to be honest it is a bit of a con. It should be made very clear to users before they sign up that they won't get a full service.

Sky don't decide it. Channel 4 do. No point blaming SKY. And also, since when did the message say that Sky are not broadcasting it?

It's the same as SKY showing RTE in the north. They don't have the rights to show some programmes.

You could try registering for 4OD if you have broadband.

On the site it says you must "live in the UK or Eire" so I'm not sure if you live in the republic, will you get the full offering from 4od (if not, try using a UK proxy).

Alright don't get you knickers in a knot... The sky screen pops up with a message saying that the program is not available in ROI.

All I know is, I pay SKY for a service which they say includes channel 4. In my eyes it does not, regardless of whos to blame. It id probable buried in the small print somewhere, but it is a bit underhand of them not to make this clear.

Regardless, Thanks for the info everyone.

@CoNfOuNd - I have a Mac, and looking at that website, you need a WinXP.

No one made Sky take out all those "now includes c4" ads....

But isn't 4OD just Channel 4's own programming? Or should I say, isn't it only C4's own programming that is free to view?

This may well have been a condition of adding C4 that others decided - not Sky or C4... remember that it's TV3 keeping UTV off the Sky EPG because they broadcast the same programming - perhaps some of the Irish broadcasters said that C4 would not be allowed to broadcast anything they had before them - movies or TV etc.

It's not like that on NTL, but then again UTV is available there too. It's kind of odd considering the fact that the BBC are as likely to have the same imported programming as RTÉ and yet there are no conditions on their broadcast.

Of course they are going to do that. It is up to you to read the small print.

Suppose if the service is not up to scratch for you then you could always cancel it. That's the only way Sky will know you are pissed off about it.

You could invest in an FTV card. Swap out the cards when you want to watch something that has been blocked.
