I want to moan about the ads before films, I'm going there to enjoy myself and escape reality for an hour or two and what are the ads they keep showing, firstly yer one who has a drinking problem, and after that we get an earfull about rape and abuse from the folks at the rape crises center, surely there is a more apropriate time and place to advertise

Yeah i would agree with you.You go to watch a movie and all the crap comes on before it which is boring.Like turn off your phone advert

I would actually pay a higher price to not have to see them and for the film to start on time. It's getting ridiculous at this stage.

There a pain in the ass. Your paying into the Cinema you shouldn't have to put up with these ads.
The next logical step for advertisements would be a break in the movie. That will be a sad day for Cinema if that ever happens.

It's not that long ago when there were intermissions during all films to allow for a bathroom break and trip to the concession stand.

I hate ads before movies, aprticularly the latest anti-abortion one(!!) but they are pretty much a requirement, in Ireland anyway.

With Irish cinemas, the majority of the ticket price goes to the distributer, not the cinema. The money they make, is from sweet sales, and advertising revenue.

It is different in America though, for instance. As far as i know, the film companies support the cinemas to a large extent, so advertising revenue is not a requirement, I have heard Disney do not allow ads to be shown before their movies as a result of this.

Ya ads I dont like. Trailers however I enjoy watching before a movie.

I do hate these ads as well. I understand the cinema needs to turn a profit etc but It still really bugs me. What was worse was for awhile there in the savoy they showed Ads and no trailers!!! that really used to annoy me. I love seeing new trailers in the cinema and no trailers being shown is not an option.

I remember seeing Dante's Peak in the Odeon in Manchester years ago and there was a full 35 minutes of ads and trailers before the film. Thankfully its not that bad here yet.

If they published the start time of the film it would make life a lot easier with regards to this.

Love trailers, hate ads. And they seem to be getting longer and longer.

The only possible advantage of the damn things is that when you're running late you can always add about ten minutes onto the starting time stated in the listings.

The anti-abortion ad (oh I'm sorry - 'positive choices' ad) that was playing ahead of Spiderman 3 was a bit much.

But yeah - way too many ads in general these days.

I have no real problem with them. I am well used to ignoring them these days.

In fairness the problem is what was pointed out before, the Cinemas need to make revenue as the film distributer take the ticket sales.

Also, its a big added bonus when your running late. You dont miss the start of the flick ^_^

dont know what part of america your thinking of, cause in New York they have even MORE ADS!

the only difference is more of the ads are for television shows etc (cause like you say studios have an influence) and less for rape crisis and other such things (havnt seen the anti-abortion one yet).

In some cinema's they have what they call the 40, which is 40 minute long magazine programs that starts 40 minutes before the expected start time of the film, its simply full of advert documentaries on upcoming films/tv shows. Sort of mixed on this, as it really doesnt eat into the film's timeframe so it's a nice bonus. On the other hand I personnally above all other things dispise those making of documentaries (biggest load of self masturbation most of the time).

then you get the 20 minute ad piece followed by 10 minutes of trailers and then the film.

*this is all running from memories from 2 years ago.*

The few times Ive been to the cinema in England have been much worse than we have to put up with over here - I remember sitting through nearly half an hour of ads one time. Have only been to the cinema once in America, and that was the best part of a decade ago, so can't comment on what its like over there.

I don't mind the trailers, but it's the advertisements that get me. Especially the ones that Ive had to put up with everytime Ive gone to the cinema in the last year. Examples:
    • the Guiness Penguin ad. It wasn't funny the first time
    • the Budwiser 'Young Folks' ad. Urge to kill rising...
    • Terrible things happen behind closed doors, apparantly. No s**t. [edit: I am aware this ad has a good cause, but c'mon, it could be handled a bit better.
    • And so forth

I go to Storm cinemas, most I've ever seen there was 3 ads. Then about 3-5 trailers.

Ads focusing on Rape and Drink problems are all well and good but I draw the line at one for Shrek the Turd!

C'mon now folks, the ads before the flick provide the cinema with extra revenue so they can reduce their admission prices..... Hang on, its nearly a tenner for a poxy cinema ticket!!!!!!

what happened to those cinema days for a pound UCI used to run?

If I go to Spiderman 3 then that's what I want to see. Not ads, not trailers. If they're going to show "extra content" then I want to be paid to watch it.

It would be nice to have an option though wouldn't it. Pay a bit extra. No ads. Film starts at the correct time.

Another plug for Storm here. 3 or 4 ads, followed by 3 or 4 trailers, and then the movie. Perfectly acceptable.

Compared to the Omniplex chain (12-15 ads, followed by 1 trailer), which is ridiculous.

Cinema is too expensive as it is. Shouldnt have to put up with the torrent of ads. I understand they have to make money, but it should be bloody reasonable!

i just add 10 mins to the start time in the papers and usually have missed most of the crap at the start.

Haha, really can't believe people are complaining about ads at the cinema. I go about twice a month and could not care less to be honest. I get to sit down, relax...it allows people running late to make the film in time (would you want them coming during the first 20 minutes of the film?).

Find something else to whinge about.

I have to say the ads dont bother me at all. I just chat to whoever im with until the film starts.
