proxy settings trinity college

HI!
i have some problem with my just installed ubuntu
mozilla works well with the proxy that trinity gave me, but i have problems with add/remove program and with the proxy settings i think as it does not seem to download programs.
any suggestion?

What error are you getting? Perhaps the repositories are on the TCD blacklist.

This is the message i get if i try to install a program from the add/remove thing.
i think that with the right configuration it is possible to use ubuntu with trinity, but i don't know what to do! thank you!

Ah, yes that would explain it. The package manager doesn't ask for a user name and password before it attempts to connect, and the proxy server is rejecting its attempts without your authentication.

Do you have to log in when you first connect with mozilla?

You can add the proxy username and password in the /etc/apt/apt.conf file
or maybe in the apt.conf.d subdirectory.

Look for a line that starts:
Acquire::http::Proxy
It may have something along the lines of this after it (on the same line)
"http://MYDOMAIN\MYNAME:MYPASS@MY.PROXY.COM:MYPORT"

If you don't have a line like that, add one.
Try setting up a value that includes your given name password proxy address and port.
You'll need the domain name if it's a windows proxy server (Your admin may mention NTLM).

This may not work for the gui package managers, but it works fine for apt-get on its own.

An alternative is to put it in an environment variable.
Typing in

export http_proxy="http://username:password@proxy.server:port/"
sudo apt-get update

may be sufficient.

i solved the problem of the add/remove thing by putting myusername:password@tcdproxy.tcd.ie in the proxy settings.
however i have problems with skype, eikiga, amsn and so on.. any suggestion? i tried to put the same on amsn but doesnt work

there should be global proxy settings somewhere. KDE has them anyway.

I think he may mean the Gnome equivalent of global settings under
System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy .

@Rotafixa, could you confirm if you put it there or in the package manager?

i put it where you said nial.
username:password@tcdproxy.tcd.ie in system-proxysettings
the add/remove program works now, anything else( msn, skype, ubuntu update..) doesn't...
