I was wondering is pixmania a reliable place to buy from? I'm looking to get a Nikon D40 and the cheapest place I can find is pixmania but as it is so expensive I am concerned is it a good place to buy from? Are there sufficient warrenties etc included? What about tech support? Any help anyone can give me would be great!

    Tech support, no!
    Warranty, yes! Manufacturer's warranty.
They're as reliable as any other.
    Have you looked on eBay?
Can often get a better deal there.
Memory card thrown in too, or something.

I can't recommend them enough. I've gotten tons of electronics/camera kit from them (including my Canon 400D) and I couldn't be happier. Shipping is really fast, and they seem to usually have what I'm looking for... 5-stars, all the way...

Not really a big fan of ebay, really liked the set up of pixmania and was hoping for good things! I still need to go around dublin and check prices too but for the moment all im seeing is around the 600 euro mark and seeing as its quite expensive as it is I'd go for the cheapest I could! Pixmania are offering the camera, case and memory card for 575 or so, seemed like a good deal?

I turned out alright though, they got them in and it was delivered just in time for xmas!! but i did do an awful lot of frettin!

You'd get a Canon 400D for similar money and in my opinion, it's a better camera. When you see the images you capture, you wont regret spending the money.
Are you doing Photography in college or is it just a hobby?

I've bought a number of items from Pixmania in the last two years and have to say I never had any trouble either on delivery or quality. Do check around though for prices. Currently they're on of the worst for Canon 400D. Can buy it cheaper in Ireland than from them. They also charge different prices depending on what European country you're in. I don't think, however, that I would buy anything abroad for a saving of 25 Euro. Easier to deal with warranties and things when you can take the item back to a physical shop imho.

At the moment it's just a hobby but I'm planning on going back to college after a year out to do a photography course so am looking to really invest in a good one. I've heard only good things about the Nikon D40 but i'm open to suggestion if anyone has any. Must be DSLR and for about the 600 mark (less is always better!)

Canon 400D seems to be about 800 from Bermingham Cameras - bit too much for me!

Got my 400D from them (at the time it was a lot cheaper than elsewhere). Shipping was really fast. Arrived at 11am on a Tuesday after purchasing during weekend (no shipping on weekend). No problems with it either

    Dont buy from ebay !

Nikon Treat them as second hand products and in some cases warranty will not be offered

Pixmania are not nikon dealers but yes they honour their warranty

i would say go for D40X u will get a 10 MP rather than D40

Pm me for more details :) I am the company insider

might help u with discount too if i could but u mught have to wait a while !

    Don't buy Nikon off eBay.
To the best of my knowledge, Canon have no problem with online retailers.
Like I said on another thread, I bought my 400D on eBay, from a UK seller, for just over €600 and that included a 2Gb card.
Delivery inside 3 days with UPS.

I think Nikon are fair langers for treating online retailers, who sell through eBay, with such contempt!

I am looking for a Nikon D40 at a good price but prices with Irish retailers seem to vary a lot. Argos has it for 600 euro while Jessops (Ireland) are charging 749. Jessops (UK) have it for 329 Stg online. BIG difference...
    Anyone with any suggestions?

They use DHL as shipping so tracking is always provided and its fast.
Bought loads of stuff from them without any trouble at all.
    another reliable one is Technicdirekt.de
Bought my GS500 from them last year and a F80 a couple of years ago..
Ebay for lenses etc.. but would not buy my body there.. but thats my personal 2 cents..

I bought my 350d from them and it arrived quickly as specified, but it came without any English documentation which was a bit of a pain but otherwise they were fine.

Well I have both from Pixmaina and EBAY ... and personally I think you are insane to even cosider buying in Ireland ... but it is your call ...

With resepct to pixmania I have bought a film scanner and photo printer from them ... no problems with items but their after sales service is vitrtually non existant and god help you if a shipment goes astray ... Having said that, I buy all my digital printing consumables from them ... so they are grand ... but not for kit ...

What is the problem with EBAY?

Try Albert at Kea Photo (this is his email also) in EBAY in Hong Kong .. many of us use him and I've yet to hear any complaint ... in fact quite the opposite ... read to places to buy kit thread ... I have spent a consdierable amount of cash on lenses and other stuff ... all grand ... with full warranty ... no fakes ... great attitude to selling ... personal service ... what more can I say? ... better than impersonal non existant after sales service at pixmania ... if you are worried about warranty just buy a Mack 3 year from KeaPhoto or www.mackcam.com ... I don't even use Ebay to buy form him any more ... just email and paypal ... this way he will give you additional discounts ... though there are already considerable discounts to be had via ebay !!! ... Believe me I have saved to price of a few Canon L lenses this year alone in purchases ...

The only problem I had with pixmania was that a fuji f10 I bought there a while back for my mother in-law came with no english documentation. Oddly the box was in English but everything inside was in French. They did include a plug adapter though.

    SONY Cyber-shot DSC-T100 in black

Thinking of getting one of these is E-bay or Pixmania better to buy off?
Thanks for all you help in advance :)

Just to warn you. I placed an order on Monday with Pixmania thinking I'll have it before the weekend, especially since all items were in stock.

After being told that the order was being prepared on Tuesday I was disappointed but could deal with a one day delay. No more updates were given to me so on Wednesday I sent an email through the website to check on the status of my order.

I got 2 replays to further questions and was informed that my order had been dispatched with DHL at 5.30pm on 30st May. This was a blatant and utter lie and the parcel was still being prepared and a quick phone call to DHL confirmed that the parcel had not been picked up.

On Thursday I sent yet another query to Pixmania with exactly the same response as the day before...another lie. Not until 16.15pm on Friday the 1st of June was the order finally sent by Pixmania with DHL.

All this meant that I wont have my camera for heading on holidays and I'm going to have to arrange for someone to pick it up from DHL.

Maybe it was my fault for being naive enough to think they'd honour their agreement. Whatever the case I won't be ordering off them again due their customer service department telling me complete rubbish.
