Mozilla Opening Delay Starts Recently . . .

    Folks,

Has anyone spotted the delay in opening Mozilla (except when a previous Mozilla window is currently open) that has started lately ?

There is no response from the system for about 10 secs before it finally opens.

Could it be the effect of a recent "security update" from Microsoft ?

    Tak.

Nope everything normal probably something to do with your own Firefox install.

Best course of action that solves most Firefox quirks is a clean install. Backup your bookmarks and delete any folders in the following directory

    C:\Documents and Settings\Your username\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Run Firefox again and it will create a fresh profile, bookmarks and any extensions will have to be re-imported/installed.

You might want to backup your book marks and other details before you go deletiong your whole profile, copy out any folders in the profile folder first then test firefox.

    Did that.

Some improvement - but still not as fast as it was.

Probably an extension causing the problem. Go into Mozilla Firefox Safe Mode and see if it remains this slow.

Whats this "much bigger problem" ?

    Did safe mode not help?

    Actor,

Soon after I'd put in the new version of Mozilla it just failed to restart.
That is, it would not boot on XP for me.
All one saw was a millisecond flash of the blue screen and then it gave alternative start options.

I tried all the options, safe mode, last known config, etc.

Dell woman tried to effect a repair but that option was not available.
    €50 for trying . . .

I would not let her do a total re-install as all data would be lost.

Local data recovery guy "un-tourniqueted" the twist in the file index on my XP disk.
Apparently it was the last option after failing with all other repair programs.

Recovered everything but at an appreciable cost.

Neither he nor I found any viruses on the C drive after repair.
This suggests a hard drive problem - it's 5 and a half years old and heavily worked. Have done about 3 reinstalls over that time.

So now I need to :

    a) Get new (good brand) hard-drive.

    b) Use second hard-drive (previously used for Linux distros) for automatic backup of data.

    Tak.

Theres freeware apps out there that will read SMART data from your hard disk. This can tell you the health status of the disk. If its only one program thats running slow then its probably not the hard disk anyway. Maybe you just need to reinstall the os. A defrag may fix the problem though. Worth a try...that can really reduce the performance of applications.

    I'd be a right twit if I wasn't defragging.

I do it at least every 6 weeks. I have the most defragged disk in town.

The delay in opening Mozilla last week may have been the first sign of disk trouble onset.

But it's all over now, costly as it was.

If there is a life-span to hard-drives it's a wonder that it is not made morre public.

    Tak.

Thanks for letting us know. Pretty annoying the person charging you $50 for doing nothing.

    €50 refunded.

A small boon. But welcome none the less.:)
