Forgive my general ignorance with this question but having googled the issue and found no definative answer's I thought I'd seek knowledge from a higher power...
I , yesterday, received the gift of a Wii and am wholey new to it and was wondering can you play US games on the European console?
    Thanks for any help,
Also whats the Virtual Console thread about too?

Nope, US (and Japanese) games will not work on a European Wii.

Virtual Console - every week, nintendo release 2 or 3 'retro' games for download on the Wii (either NES, SNES, Megadrive, TG16, or N64). Games cost between €5 (for NES) to €10 (for N64).

Some great games are up there already, like Zelda Ocarina of Time, Lylat Wars, Super Castlevania IV, Legend of Zelda Link To The Past, Sonic, Ecco etc.

Broadband is required to download them (you connect to a VC 'shop' on the Wii where you can pay for and download these games).

Full list of current VC games here.

The Freeloader people are working on a disc for the Wii, if they succeed, we'll be able to play US Wii games on our PAL Wiis. So fingers crossed for that one.
