I've got ubuntu working both wired and wireless - works perfect.

    Proxy config is under:
System > Prefs > Network Proxy

    Tick manaul proxy config.

    HTTP Proxy is collegeusername:collegepassword@tcdproxy.tcd.ie
The port is 8080, fill in collegeusername and password as appropriate.

Then you also need to config firefox's proxy. To do so in firefox go to edit, prefs, advanced and under connection click settings.

Use the same settings as above.

That should be all that's needed. I can post instructions for wireless internet in college if you need them, but that's a little trickier - involves some command line stuff.

    thank you very much!
i am now writing from my computer!
however i m afraid it did not work with your settings, but you made me notice that i had to modify also safari's options.
the only problem is that the add/remove thing doesn't work and i think it has to do with the proxy.
in safari it works if i put (see below) as an automatic proxy http://proxypac.tcd.ie/accelerated_pac_base.pac

but if i do the same in proxy configuration or if i put your settings the add/remove thing doesn't work.

you need to use tcdproxy.tcd.ie NOT tcdproxy.ie but otherwise follow Cian's instructions and it should be perfect :--)

i used tcdproxy.tcd.ie (as you and cian said) but it doesn't work. mozilla works only with the automatic proxy but the add/remove(i need to install the codec for mp3!) program doesn't work with any settings that i have tried...
    thanks anyway, !

Yup - you need to configure the proxy in almost all of the programs you use generally - it doesn't take it all from Ubuntu's global settings. You're in halls right? So am I, if you have any more problems just call over to me and I'll sort them out. I'll be back in halls this Monday.
