    Hope someone might be able to help on this.
    Yesterday my Pc wouldn't boot and I got this error message saying that that the'hal.dll' file was missing. I got passed this by following instructions on Microsoft Knowldge Base which involved running the bootcfg /rebuild command from the Recovery Console. The thing is according to Microsft I should now modify the boot.ini file to remove the incorrect entry. Problem is I have no idea what I;m looking at. A copy of the file is below:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Home Edition"
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

    You have to remove either
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Home Edition"

    OR

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

    But not both which one do you use to boot to windows the first or second option on the boot screen?

    I'm guessing the second one is the one you can delete but dont have to.

    Thanks for the reply.
    I select the first one to boot with. If I delete the second one I assume there is nothing that needs to replace it and that Windows will just boot automatically then
