ah the you can't win game, further break down of specs is on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macbook

    from news.com
The new consumer laptops, all of which are an inch thick and have 13.3-inch displays with 1280x800-pixel wide-screen resolution, are available in three models: white with the option of 2GHz or 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors, or black with the faster professor. All three models are equipped with 1GB of RAM that can be expanded to 2GB, built-in iSight video cameras, AirPort Extreme wireless cards capable of 802.11n wireless networking, and two USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire port.

The lower-end white MacBook, with a starting price of $1,099, comes with an 80GB hard drive; its 2.16GHz counterpart, which has a 120GB hard drive and a faster, double-layer support 8x SuperDrive DVD drive, costs $1,299. The black MacBook, identical to the faster white MacBook except for the color and a beefed-up 160GB hard drive, is priced at $1,499.

The 2.16Ghz macbook is a pretty good match to the macbook pro with the exception of graphics, I'd say Macbook Pros will be upgraded soon...its certainly a good sign :)

Get an external hd and transfer all the video/music (or whatever is taking up all that space) on to it.

It's easy enough to upgrade the hard drive on a Macbook isn't it?

Where are the Macbook Pro updates for fecks sake! My Powerbook is on it's last legs here... I really need to upgrade.

you can clone your current hard disk onto the new one. or back up your files and then do a clean install on the new hard drive. there is a thread on here a few weeks ago about it if you search the forum.

not huge boosts is it? (i may be wrong) Does anyone know if there's gonna be more upgrades when the new intel processors come out and/or tiger?

I assume you mean Leopard. ;)

    I suppose 160-170mhz isn't a huge boost, but then again, it's the Core2Duo we're talking about -- it's a killer anyway.
Giving the low-end 1Gb of RAM was nice tho. Even if it's still stuck with a Combodrive. And everyone likes more storage.

As for future upgrades: new Macbook Pro's might upgrade to Santa Rosa, but they'd have to do it soon. However, since (IIRC) Santa Rosa's main draw is "Robson", i.e. booting from flash memory, I'm not sure if they'll bother.
And by "I" I mean "the greater internet". :)

Considering one of the new 2.16 MacBooks myself, anyone heard anything, good or bad, that I should know about? I have read lots of comment concerning the 'millions of colours' class action, but that seems to be somewhat esoteric for us plebs. Comments on the more mundane please.

If you buy an Apple product within 2 weeks before an upgrade you're entitled to a free upgrade if you want it. Just give Apple a call.

My apologies, I thought this was an advice forum, not a court of law! :)
And before you say it, I know the hassle incorrect advice can cause, I moderate a UK based Computer Forum so I'm no noob. ;)

Anyway, in the US if you buy an Apple product 14 or less days before an upgrade you are entiled to get the upgraded model. The conditions are:
If the box is opened you will be charged a 10% restocking fee and
If you ordered a CTO model then you cannot return it. It has to be a BTR model ie. the standard configuration.

I'm not sure if this policy applies in Ireland, if that is where user.ie purchased it, but as I suggested, a phone call will shed light on that.

I've seen countless posts on this on many forums, even Apple's own discussion boards and the same response is always given.

@user.ie Even though the MacBook has been upgraded you still have an excellent machine that will last you years. They were upgraded a month after I bought mine last year so I missed out on the Core 2 update!! :)

yeah, even with my upgrade from 1.5 gig to 2gig ram.

but whats the story about photoshop cs3? has somebody test it this?

According to the specs page it should run ok.
If you're considering buying it though you should donload the free trial first to see for yourself.
And maybe start a new thread for it as we've kinda gone off topic here! :)

Seriously, according to a report in Wed's Irish Times, the ECC (European Consumer Centre) is investigating quote"built-in obsolescence" unquote. which "causes the laptop to break down, just outside the end of the year's warranty period". The article is much more detailed, but I'm sure it will still be available on their website.

afaik this is in relation to iBooks, though I did read it was proven by some crowd in Finland or something
