My boyfriend often DJ's in nightclubs, generally starting at 12 and finishing at 2. He had a gig this Saturday night but was told it was cancelled because of the 'new pub closing times'. When he asked what they meant the other person told him that apparently the latest pubs can now stay open is 1.30am and this is coming in on Saturday. I haven't heard anything about this anywhere so I'm guessing it's not true. Anyone heard anything about it?

Well according to my boyfriend the guy said all late bars. I also overheard a girl in work saying something about it. Probably a local rumour.

That means the girl he was going to be getting jiggy with is having her time of the month, so you're up again ergo. ;)

False, either your boyfriend is a crap DJ or he's doing the dirty with a nightclub regular

AFAIK late bars are licenced regularly by the local court on the advice of the local garda superintendent. A change of opinion may see closing hours change.

A venue I work in has a licence to serve till 1am, but often pushed that to 1.30am and further. This practice continued until we were visited by a local Guard, then we made sure that we stopped serving at 1am sharp.

This could very well have happened in your bf's place.

I did read something about this in the paper... It was for one weekend in Kilkenny... there was some festival on or something and they didn't want the crowds wrecking the town...

I was over for the rugby in London at the weekend and overheard a group beside us talking about Kilkenny pubs and nightclubs shutting their doors and 1:30 sharp?! Some new regulations in the city or something?..........

Here in Waterford its 2am as well. But only if you're one of the pubs/clubs the guards don't like. Otherwise its 2:30. It could be that the guards don't like that particular pub and are cracking down on it.

The 1.30 closing times were brought in the weekend before last. It's apparently going to stop violence on the streets because you know, the minute the pubs close everyone is just going to go straight home to bed. If they want this to work they're going to have to force all the fast food places to close early too. At 3am last Saturday there was still a massive crowd outside Supermac's.

Either way, it's absolutely stupid and I haven't talked to one person in Kilkenny who thinks it's a good idea.
