Ok this evening (7/7.30ish) i was at home- boyfriend was at the cinema/ housemates were out and i had my 6 month old niece with me-I was taking care of her for the evening to give my sister a much deserved meal out with her partner.

Got the baby to sleep and popped into the loo- and someone rang the doorbell. Not being gross but i was on the loo at this stage so i though"they can wait a minute. Bell rang again- then again(each like a second after each other) so headed down the stairs and then the person banged hard on the door then pressed the bell and held on to it.

At this stage the baby was woken up and started SCREAMING so i ran up to calm her down(Loud bell must have frightned her its one of those really loud ones that u can hear through the whole house.) Meanwhile the bell was dinging away- so i went downstairs with a screaming baby in my arms and answered the door. There was a foreign guy outside finger STILL on the bell with a big smirk on his face.

This was the conversation(now remember i was VERY pissed off at this stage)

Him- "Oh hello i am selling these paintings...

    Me "WHAT?

Him " i am selling these paintings..."

Me- "ITS GONE 7 O CLOCK IN THE EVENING HOW DARE U CALL AT THIS HOUR"

hIM "Im sorry but i am selling.......

Me- NO IM NOT INTERESTED- DO YOU NOT SEE IVE A SCREAMING BABY IN MY ARMS- AND YOU WOKR HER UP- ARE YOU GOING TO PUT HER BACK TO SLEEP FOR ME?

    Him-"Im sorry i didnt know...."

Me" YOU DIDNT KNOW WHAT-THAT AT THIS HOUR NORMAL PEOPLE ARE HAVING THEIR DINNER AND GETTING THEIR KIDS OFF TO SLEEP AND U COME ALONG AND HOLD ON TO BELLS TILL THEY ANSWER THE DOOR AND WAKE UP THEIR KIDS(all in one breath)

    Him- "I will go

Me" ya u will and next time u call here ill punch you"

and i slammed the door(I know it was a bit mean but i was furious hed held on to the bell for so long out of pure ignorance.

About a half an hour later i started to feel a bit guilty

About 9 my housemates came back from town- I was upstairs changing the baby as my sister was due to pick her up.All of a sudden i heard yelling and banging. I went downstairs(baby in arms) and there was what looked like a fight outside the garden.

That guy i had ran from the door earlier was in our garden and my housemate had seen him hop over the gate and try to make off with out lawn mower(a lawn mower of all things?)

Called the cops on the cheeky ****er- So much for feeling guilty about yelling at him. Cheeky bastard!

You should have hit the bloke. Alot of them foreigners dont respect our culture at all by ringing the doorbell 100 times thinking its OK. He was probably scoping out the place to see what he could rob.

If that was me he would've been lying on the ground the time the bell was rung 3 times!

    waaay out of line!
that was ridiculous! ringing the bell like that?!
there's been a few threads like that about people with art, but you have to have a bit of manners and consideration!
you were not in the wrong at all!

Keep the racist tone out of this thread (looks at PCros)... plenty of Irish cheeky feckers out there too.

    DeV.

You were well within your rights to do that, the way he had a smirk on his face when you opened the door with the screaming child would have sent me over the edge! Its like he knows what hes done at this stage and doesnt care.

The reason the person rang your bell so many times and knocked on the door was to make sure there was no-one home... He was planning on robbing your house and the paintings thing is to try and look like he has a reason to be there. I'm sure this "scam" has been mentioned here before.

Do all the guys who are saying "If that had have been me he would be lying on the ground" or "You should have punched him" not realise that the OP is a woman?

I'm replying to this version - I feel sorry for it.

Whilst i have the utmost respect for foreigners who, rather than come here to work, sell paintings instead (snigger), I believe this particular character was, how do you say ... bang out of order?
Anyway whilst I wouldn't typically condone violence against our foreign national counterparts (snigger), a swift, earnest and repeated oscillation of your foot towards his nutsac, should in future suffice.

7pm isn't exactly late for ****s sake. He might have been taking the piss with the bell but sounds like you over-reacted big style to me. Typical woman.

7pm is pretty late if you have a baby in the house! It can take hours to get them to sleep some times and this cheeky fúcker stands there holding the bell until someone answers...

So OP what happened to the guy? Was he arrested?

i have no time for anyone selling anything door to door imo if it was a reputable product would buy it in a shop, door to door selling is something i would usually associate with travellers asking if i would like them to tarmacadam my lawn or beggars trying to sell tickets for the alcohol center or whatever it is. i haveno time for door to door selling generally i would just ignore them ringing bell and if i was passing door i would just open it and say not interested, as for them being excessive with door bell i would prob go mental too:D
