Dead ipod?

I have an ipod (I know!), anyway went dead today, won't charge, turn on, be read by the computer. Basically no signs of life at all.

Does anyone know if it's the battery, or something worse. If its the battery I'll change it, but if it's something worse I'll just upgrade to another brand!

Have you tried resetting it whilst it is plugged into the charger.

Yeah but it's not taking a charge, no action on the screen no matter what I do.

Just trying leaving it hooked up to a charger for a few hours anyway, even though it doesn't seem to be responding. Then try the reset steps whilst still on the charger. I had an apparently dead iPod come back to life this way in the past and it kept going ever since.

Do you have an actual charger for the iPod or is it charged through the computers USB port ? I'm guessing since iPods no longer come with a charger you're using USB. In that case connect it directly to the PC and not through a hub and make sure the PC isn't warning of over current on the USB port.

This is happening more often now with people not leaving the iPod connected long enough to get a proper charge or they plug them into those iStation things which seem - from reports - to do more harm than good.

As for the reset procedure, are you holding the buttons down long enough ? Have you slid the HOLD button on then off. I've had iPods where people swore blind they'd followed the steps and failed but it worked for me first time !!

In very very rare cases opening it up and disconnecting the battery for a few seconds cures it.

Another thing, is there any noise from it - like a hard disk clicking or spinning up and then down again ?

Thanks for your help, I have an a/c adapter as well as the USB thing + resetting did nothing for me... BUT I left it disconnected for a day + then when I tried to switch it on it displayed the low battery symbol, so I charged it and its working fine again! I have learnt my lesson though, no more ipods for me once this one kicks!
