Importing unregistered Bike

Just wondering about the costs ensued if you import an unregistered bike. i.e. a bike that has not had TAX or Registration fees paid in any country?

From what I hear there will be a VAT tax at 21%, then a VRT tax... is that correct?
And if so, is the VAT based purely on what you paid for the vehicle?
Also, is it inclusive of shipping costs etc.

Not really sure where this thread should go, but thought someone here might have some experience with it.

    The sum is:

    VRT
+VAT of 21% (on invoice value + shipping + VRT)
    = TOTAL

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

ya, just rang the revenue.... nasty feckers

That puts that fantastic idea in the back burner... hardly worth it to save 1k on a 21k bike..... feckers.
    continue the search.......

hold on... just noticed you have the 21% on the VRT too, are you sure about that? I don't think thats included!

   And when do you pay that - do you pay at the ferry or do you pay it when you go to get it registered?

Jimbling - yes, VAT is on the VRT too, sorry !

Just wondering what the bike is? At 21k, I would have thought it would be possible to negotiate to buy that bike here (I presume it's new..), for less. Do tell what it is........

AidoCQS - at time of registration, which (technically) has to be by close of business on the day after actual importation (iow, 24hrs..)

    0-60 mph in 9.5 sec
Why do you want one of these? just the novelty (which I'd understand-I quite fancy one of those diesel military bikes) perhaps?

damn thats a friggin joke, guy at revenue didnt mention that at all.

The bike I'm trying to get is the Harley Night Rod Special... I thought I would be able to get it for about 17k if I used a bit of imagination, but no matter what it's working out around 19/20k.
I think I would be best leaving it till next year and getting one 2nd hand.

And yes applying a TAX onto the value of something which has had it's price changed by an earlier tax sucks the b&lls off a donkey. It's the double tax technique the government does explain very well when it wants your vote.

I have lived in the states for years and a Harley was a bit out of reach, now I know that this aint a real Harley per say, but the brand anyway its on the tank is fine by me.
Also I am on a restricted licence and will be for the next 3 years so this at 29.8 falls under the 33 bhp
I have had a Ninja and done the pocket rocket thing now I have scrambler & commuting in me blood - maybe I am just gettin old.
Also I have always been seen in Army surplus gear so this thing fits the bill completly if it works.
If I hang onto it and clean it up it might make a collectors item some day.

AdioCQS - you might find that under Armstrong 350 if Revenue give you grief......

Jimbling - here, as they say, is what I got - and you can ride it on a provisional too, btw........whilst more than most, it cost less than I thougt it would, too...........

Thats a nice bike. But I'm not really looking for your usual Harley. I absolutely love the V-Rod harleys because they've taken a big step towards a performance bike.

I like street bikes, I like cruisers (although never been that into the massively fatboy style) and I've been looking for something in between. The V-rod family has brought to the market much more than the other "Performance Cruisers". It just sits right with me. Now, I haven't driven one yet, so I may take a spin up to waterford this weekend and try one out.
It's a fecking long way to go to get a feel for bike, but there ain't exactly much choice in matter.*

If I don't decide to break the bank and buy this I'm thinking of getting a BMW R1200R. A lovely sports tourer. What gets to me is that I'm going to be spending about 13k on what's not my ideal bike**. I could then get stuck trying to sell that next year or so when I do find an affordable second hand one of the VRSCDX models.

    * If anyone here has a V-Rod, or knows anyone with one, in the Cork area, could you get in contact if you wouldn't mind me taking a look at it.

** Are BMWs as good as they say? I've had people say to me that once you drive a bmw bike you won't want to drive anything else.

Neither was I - I loved the V-Rod.....until I sat on one. It has the absolute weirdest riding position I've ever experienced.........and it was only by accident I started looking at the trad ones. I ruled out all the bobs/springer/glides -even the Fatboy, after riding it - and boiled it down to a Heritage Softail or the RK. Once I saw the RK, it was Game Over. I'm not a fan of frills, tassles, chrome studs, spoked wheels etc etc....so the RK is a kind of.......mmm....'mod' trad V-twin......if you get me.

Not as far as for me to see what Waterford had to offer !!

I know of an 07 reg VRSCA, with only 400mls on it, for sale in Galway for 20k.

Well the RK I bought only recently, is my first non-BMW in 16 years. It's true, they are good, but like everything else, not without their foibles. Personally, I wouldn't buy a new R, as it will not sell that quickly thereafter. Small and all as the used BMW market is, the vast majority of that small market wants faired tourers and/or GS's - the unfaired R's, therefore, are a % of a %. It might take some time for that 1 guy to find you.............

If you want me to expound on my BMW's (had most, from K to R, 750 to 1150) vs the RK.........pm me.

p.s. just wondering............. I don't know, but this might be for sale...... what do you think, style-wise?? http://www.flame-art.com/gallery/Custom-Bike-Builds/116_1611

Philgunn - what is the 'statistical code' on your reg cert for the Armstrong - if you can give that to OP, there should be no confusion over paperwork......

just to update. Took the day off last Wednesday to go around test driving...cars and bikes :D

Took out the BMW F800ST and the R1200R at Kearys. To be honest, wasn't that impressed by either. Main thing was how delightful it was to be back on a bike for the first time in almost two years. They were very nimble and fun to ride, but the engines didn't feel as powerful or smooth as they should.

Off I went to Waterford where I took out a 05 VRSCA. Mixed emotions about this one. As mentioned, the riding position is a bit extreme, but it's not that far off bikes i used to own. What I did love was the engine. Absolutely fantastic feel too it. The other downside would be the complete and utter lack of wind protection... any sort of long trip would be tough going. May have to purchase one of those quick release windshields.

I wanted to try a night rod (to get a feel for the mid-positions) but he didn't have one at the time. The plan was to return on sat and take both for a spin, with the intention of purchasing one of them (he had a 06 night rod coming in on fri).

On Friday I found an 03 Anniversary model A for sale down the country for a very reasonable price, so I put off the trip to Waterford and am going to head to kerry during the week some time. Probably make the purchase if there's no surprises.

Oh, and I did get to SIT on a DX... god damn I want that friggin bike.... but I'll settle for an A model for the time being.

Just got an email back from the revenue and they assured me the VAT is not calculated with the VRT included.
