Anyone been dissappointed with their Ps3

Hi all. I have waited to see how this latest gen of consoles would fare once they've all been released before deciding where to put my cash. To be honest i was very tempted to just go for the xbox360 once i heard the price of the ps3, but then i actually borrowed one and suffered the noise of the thing. I know it shouldn'tbe a major concern...but i found myself having to pump up the volume from the surround sound to drown out the fan noise on the thing....even when the games not running its loud.

There are some games on the xbox i would miss like Forza 2 ( i loved FM on the xbox, thought it even better than GT) and HALO3. But there are plenty of advantages to having the PS3 too.

So to my question...has anyone had a PS3 and been dissappointed by it? Any area where they felt let down on what was promised/expected?

with the machine itself no, it does exactly what it says on the tin, no more no less, blu-ray looks class, crystal clear and very sharp, so am very happy with the machine

Where i do feel letdown however is the delayed release dates of games, not really much out for it at the moment, while the games i have keep me amused and entertained, i cant help thinking that I want more of them out, hopefully things will pick up after the summer with home and whats coming out, but the end of the summer is a long way away :P

I'm delighted with my PS3. The only dissappointment is not with the machine itself, but the current lack of games and the abysmal EU Playstation store. With all the music/films/tv shows that sony has the rights to I think that they should be offering more than sudoku and super rub a dub for download!
Does anyone else think that Sony just doesnt care about their european PS3 owners?

yeah i would love to see spiderman 3 demo up on the store

Europes been crapped on since the PS1, always the last to get games, several months after japan or the states and who was surprised when they dleayed the release of the PS3 here.

I'm rather impressed by it actually, but do agree with the others on the games selection. It is pretty abysmal, the key thing to most launches is a soccer game and theres no game in sight for a while.

dont really use mine for games, get alot of use out of it for videos/web browsing/and music listening and the odd blu-ray.

No, I use mine every day!
Web-browser, blu-ray player, Resistance offline and on, Moterstorm online! etc... enough to keep me happy for a while

Its a fantastic blu-ray player, and Ive bought a quite a few from amazon, but the primary reason I bought a PS3 is for the games.Resistance and motorstorm are great but i can only play them so much.
I dont have an xbox but i hear they can buy tv shows etc. on xbox live. Sony needs to match this kind of service. They are more than capable of doing this, they could put tv shows like rescue me on the ps store. What about sony music, it could be like itunes on your ps3. And what about Sony films, they own tons of films. The ps3 hard drive is perfectly designed for all these things with its upgradeable hard drive and capability for external drives. But no, we are stuck with sudoku. I love my PS3 bu this crap is not good enough!!

Thats only for the USA, not over here at all.

I read something recently that Sony will be adding music and films at some stage to the store. I think there is a 'gamers day' coming up so we might hear something about it.

It kinda is though. All you do is set up a US account, takes 5 minutes. I've downloaded plenty of shows/movies.

    Gran,

if you had to have one or the other, which would it be?

Cool, never knew that. Whats it like?

Between the two I'd still rather pick up my 360 controller for a bit of shooter action. I have no doubt that the PS3 is the more powerful console with the better prospects, but the 360 just has better games and Xbox Live is a heck of a lot better than what I've experienced on PS Network.

In a few months time when Halo hype has all passed and PS3 has some decent games, I'll probably be singing a different song.

As of right now, the 360 has better games. But the PS3 is a much better piece of hardware all round and since I bought mine I haven't touched the 360, because there's been nothing interesting on it since I completed Crackdown a good while ago (although there's new Crackdown downloadable stuff I wanna try)

On the horizon the PS3 has much better stuff than the 360, for my tastes at least. Sony's exclusive stuff tends to have a whole lot more originality, and is mostly action adventures, platformers, JRPGs and racers aswell as more experimental games like stuff that uses the camera and microphone. The 360 exclusives are mostly shooters and western-style RPGs.

You won't be disappointed with either console really though, whatever choice you make there'll be a lot of great games to choose from.

I'd pick the 360 any day.. much better game range and most region free
meaning I only spend about 30-40 euro for a top 10 game on-line from
    play-asia. It's great using your own MP3s as a soundtrack in-game,
eg playing Saints Row listening to NWA/Cypress Hill streamed over wifi from
    PC is great!

I'm off to play C&C3 on the 360

By the time it was actually released here, it was pretty obvious that it was going to be a slow starter. I've no complaints about the games - I'm enjoying RR7 and Tekken DR quite a bit.

My only gripes really are more to do with the firmware. Not being able to play music in the background, and not being able to change the background color or apply wallpaper is just a little annoying.

Id recoment the PS3 over the xbox , its much better , even though ive 10 xbox games and only 2 ps3 games i still play the ps3 all the time , ( allthough when i get C&C later that may change ).

The xbox has no features of any use that the PS3 doesnt have , so you can stream to your xbox ( provided you have a pc ) why not just watch/listen to your stuff from the PC since you have had to switch it on rather than running a xbox a tv and a pc just to watch TV !!!! ( these things are important if your mammy doesnt pay your ESB bill .

You can listen to mp3's during the game, great a nice little feature but of no use just put your songs on a stereo hey presto listen to music and play the game ;) .

But id never recomend a xbox to anyone based on the fact it will prob break down , mine at the moment is weezing like a fat man jogging out of 3 of us that got xbox's 2 broke down and mine is acting up .

I wouldnt like to see you spend 400 quid on a machine that isnt wireless and cant play HD disks only for it to break down on you

Would you buy a car with a cd player or would you 'recoment' just wearing a walkman whilst driving?:D You're missing the whole benefit of having your own MP3s as the actual in-game
soundtrack, in fact I can rip a CD to the 360 hard-drive and use that as in-game music
meaning there's no need to even have the laptop on. I can pause the game and pause
the music at the same time -without having to reach for the stereo or it's remote.

Does your stereo play on batteries as I'm struggling to understand how a TV+360+laptop
    uses more electricity than TV+PS3+stereo?
(And for the record my 'mammy' hasn't paid my ESB bill in nearly 20 years, luckily I've a job which means I don't have to worry about how many kilowatts I'm burning).

TO WATCH A VIDEO I TURN ON TV PLUS PS3 : YOU TURN ON PC XBOX + TV
    3 IS BIGGER THAN 2 .
(as you can clearly see from what i wrote im on about watching video "rather than running a xbox a tv and a pc just to watch TV !!!!") .

For the record yes i have driven my car while wearing my earphones , after walking from work to the car ill just sit in and drive home still listening to the headphones .

And its nothing like having a stereo in the car , its more like having a stereo in the car that turns off when you get out . rather than you having to press the off button .

As i say its a nice little feature but totally useless and not really a selling point , and one sony will prob add in the next few updates

Nope, one of the most used features on my console and my friends and a feature that regularly requested on forums. I don't have access to my whole music library on the stereo and my 5.1 is my stereo so I play it at the same time anyway.

I got a Wii for Christmas along with a few games. At the start the Wii was class then it just got boring and all I did was go online on it. The fact that there was no online play at that time really got me annoyed.

Then I decided I would sell it as there wasn't really many games coming out for it. Got around 500euro for it with games etc. Then on the 27th March decided I would get a PS3 my father paid the extra.

I was so excited to find a PS3 in my room when I came home from school one day. I set it up and it takes a while to set up and boy was it amazing. Played Motorstorm and the graphics where amazing. Then played some Resistance and it is now my favourite FPS.

The Wii and 360 are both great consoles but believe me when I say the PS3 is far better. The 360 has the better games now but who says thats not going to change in 3 years. I believe that the Wii will stop going in around 3 years and let the PS3 and Xbox 360 Elite to battle it out.

I believe that the PS3 (when HOME is released) will kick xbox live's ass. If you are getting a PS3 make sure to get Resistance. The PS3 also includes a Blu-Ray player which is magnificent. Some people dont like Blu-Ray in there console but if it wasn't in the PS3 I wouldn't be writing this now. Only reason my dad paid extra 200 was for the Blu-Ray player. If you enjoy Home Entertainment then the PS3 is what you need.

I'm watching the majority of my AVI tv shows off the PS3 now, takes around 15 minutes to convert an episode, burn it onto a DVD RW, then rinse and repeat. Really looking forward to some decent titles coming out.

Or you can stream directly from your PC with the 360 and watch the shows without having to convert and burn.

    Pros and cons to everything.

horses for courses really if you really have to listen to your mp3's through your console then the xbox is your man , if you are happy playing away while listening to your stereo or even the in game music then it isnt a big selling point .

I have to say i normally just use the in game music as your own will take away from the atmosphere the game producers are trying to obtain .

i can see it being usefull in long deathmatch senarios though just not enough to make me buy a xbox over a PS3

now i'm impressed, was waiting on the compnent cable to come through the post, got it today an it's blown me away i knew there was a difference but not this big. Motorstorm impressed the hell out of my via scart but compoent has brought it to an precedented level.

i've been well impressed by the machine itself, not so much with the games. i probably play the cheapy ps store games more then the €70 games from stores... but that's typical for a new console.

    Hi,
perhaps i'm in the wrong forum...but does the PS3 upscale 'SD' Dvd's to 1080i......i have a big DVD collection and want to get the best out of them on my new FULL HD tv (1080p).....should i consider a seperate HDMI Amp and HDMI Upscaling DVD player....or settle for a HDMI DAV system....thanks

The short answer is no, not at the minute, but Sony will probably upgrade the firmware in the near future to upscale DVDs. How good the upscaling will be is anyones guess.

Can you not use linux to watch downloaded tv shows on ps3?

he 360 has the better games now but who says thats not going to change in 3 years.
Why pay a premium now for something that might happen in 3 years time?

Wouldn't hold your breath on that one.

jimoco7 get a good upscaling DVD player.

    As Clank says above,
don't bother holding off for future PS3 DVD upscaling..
The 360's upscaling sucks compared to a decent DVD upscaler (with even some budget players far more successful), and I would suspect that the PS3 will/may not be much better (even though there was rumours of them tying in with Nvidia to use the RSX to that end)..

Funny thing is that with some effort put in by either team, they could net a very advanced software based scaler, considering how the 360 and PS3 has delivered HD-DVD and BD codecs..............but as nice as it would be for the end user, it doesn't appear to be a priority for them..

Simple solution is to use a PS3 for games/BD, use a 360 for games and use a good DVD upscaler for DVD..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Clank

I wouldn't have said it was that bad now McDermotX, I find it's quite reasonable, always room for improvement though as you said.

About the PS3 though I was more alluding to the fact PS3 doesn't have a built in scaler whereas the 360 does.:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,464 ✭✭✭Kristok

Hardly touched mine since i got it. Ive downloaded all the demos and found them all very boring so as of yet have not bought a single game. Only game id consider buying is vf5 but seeing as it dosnt have online im waiting to see if the 360 version does before i buy either version. Cant understand why everyone thinks motostorm is great I thought it was a bit rubbish and i like rally type games usually.

With less and less ps3 exclusives and lots of 360 only games it dosnt seem theres much reason to have a ps3 at the moment. Chances are the ps3 power wont get used much as developers will probably just make games for both consoles and ps3 games will end up looking like the 360 ones bar a few sony made games.

Looking at IGN's release lists for the rest of the year, looking at games that are truly only on 360 or only on PS3, the numbers are about the same. And on the PS3 side, far more of them are guaranteed to remain exclusive (i.e. are first party - Sony is publishing nearly twice as many games on PS3 in the remainder of this year as MS is on 360, and in the end it may be even more than that). 360 loses 'exclusives' too, people just don't care as much because most of 360's exclusives aren't nearly as desired as PS3's. That may tell you something.

And PS3's power will get used, if for the most part by Sony themselves. Not at all unlike the PS2 then, eh?

I really don't think so, unless you are including the PC which doesn't count as far as console exclusivity.

As a PC gamer, I do indeed.

But even if you want to include such games, they don't bolster the numbers as much as you might think. And they seem to be prime candidates for belated announcements on PS3 (see: Oblivion, Crossfire, Timeshift, Kayne & Lynch etc.).

Regardless my point is, contrary to the implication of Kristok's comment, there are lots of (compelling) games coming to both platforms this year which you will only find on that platform.
