Cavan v Down

Started a new thread as the comments about all games yesterday were getting mixed up. My thoughts were an awful game with Cavan being tactically inept.

Donal Keoghan (Cavan manager): "We came back from three goals. We’re trying to instil belief and fighting character in them since we took over and it showed out there in the last 10 minutes when we thought we were dead and buried. I was very proud of the lads today."

Agreed - the lads had great heart but absolutely no tactics. Joe Brolly (as much as I hate to admit it) got it right when he said Armagh would never have given Coulter so much space and time. Why is Paul Grimley’s influence not showing on the Cavan tactics (or lack of tactics) - is it because Keoghan won’t listen ?

It doesn’t matter what players are picked if they are sent out without any instructions of how to play. Talking about "heart" after the game is just deflecting the criticism. Anyone who thinks it was an OK Cavan performance are deluding themselves. The defence was carved open at will - there was no organisation.

After the criticism of Keoghan following the Roscommon game I said on this board he should be given a chance in the Championship. He’s had it now.

Will the County Board be sitting down with Keoghan this morning asking what was that all about ? If Keoghan can’t answer the County Board’s questions this morning he should go and let Grimley take the reins for next week.

Yes I was listening to his comments yesterday and I must say that the only tactic Cavan seemed to have was with their attack with the long ball into the left corner forward.

If I was in charge of tactics :D I would have urged the midfield to play along the left wing and kick high balls into the centre of Downs defense.Cavan were superb in the last 6-7 minutes. The goal was a real sucker punch to Down.

Each of these two teams look like cannon fodder in the next round but I'd fancy Cavans chances better.Down had their best chance to beat Cavan yesterday and if Reilly had been on form,Cavan wouldn't have to go through the nightmare of playing a replay.

Whoever wins the replay will be well prepared for Monaghan though.I can only imagine it will boost their chances.
