Alright I installed ie7 on my work pc but I'm going back to ie6. So I went in to add/remove programs and uninstalled ie7.

According to Microsoft this should have brought me back to ie6. It did but it doesn't work. Whenever I go to a web page I get an error saying that this file is associated with a program or something along those lines.

I tried re-installing ie6 but it said I already had this version installed and
    canceled the set up.

According to Microsoft if I change a setting in the registry it should get around this. I changed the registry setting and still can't install.
This is driving me mental. Can anyone help me get back to ie6?

I'm not sure if you are trying to install it directly from the Microsoft site? but it may help to try to install it as a standalone installation.

How To Download The Full Install Package For Internet Explorer 6 + Outlook Express 6 so that it may be installed on any machine as a stand alone package.

Well it IS possible to pull down the FULL set of files, then save to CD so you can update all your PC's quickly.
NB - If you already have Windows XP SP1 (and later) installed then you HAVE Internet Explorer SP1 installed too...

How to download the full IE6 SP1...

-First of all you will need to visit the Microsoft website and get the IE6 SP1 installer using this link: http://download.microsoft.com/download/ie6sp1/finrel/6_sp1/W98NT42KMeXP/EN-US/ie6setup.exe (479kb)
-Create the following folder on your computer:
    C:\Downloads
-Now save this file to this location on your computer.
-Go to the Start Menu and select Run
A small window will appear. type in the following including the quotation marks:
    "C:\Downloads\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"
A screen like the one below will appear:

    ie6setuphl7.jpg
NB - Please note that sometimes the process will fail, if this happens try again later and you should have more success. Not sure why, but sometimes you just can't access the Microsoft download site!
You then have to accept the agreement before you can proceed. When you click on the next button a window like the one below will appear:
    ie6setup2jf5.jpg

Now you can select where you want the files to be saved.
Then select the operating system you require. (You can select ALL if you wish... this would be 49MB)
Then click the next button and a window like the one below will appear showing you the download progress for ie6 sp1 files:

    ie6setup3eu1.jpg

You will now download ie6 sp1 onto your PC!
Just open C:\Downloads folder and there are the files... You can now burn them into CD and install onto other computers as appropriate.

Yes I do have ie6 installed but whenever I try to open a webpage it tells me that there is no program associated with the file. Microsoft reccomends re-installing ie6 which I tried but that just tells me that I already have it installed and then cancels the set up . I tried that gadgetman but it just tells me that it's installed already and cancels set up.

EDIT: Just found out that it only happens if I enter the url in the address bar. If I go to google and do a search and then click a link. It works fine. But if I try using the address bar to go to the url, it says that the file is not associated with a program. How very odd. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Are you entering the exact URL including the http:// bit? If not then maybe the URLbar 'search' system has been corrupted.

If you are entering http:// then I've no idea what the problem is!

Yeah definately entering the http:// bit. I'm confused as hell.

It could be something to do with an automatic update for IE7 that you installed before the IE7 uninstall? Obviously something has corrupted somewhere.

I've never tried it but is it possible to uninstall an update without doing a system restore?

Why don't you use the Add/Remove option to uninstall IE6 like you did with IE7 and then try to install IE6?

    You can also try this:

click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:
    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

NOTE: This command is case sensitive.

Another option is to run the SFC Command, this will replace any corrupted system file(s) you may have.

How to use the SFC Command:

    Start
    RUN
Type the following string into the box,

sfc /scannow (Note the space between the sfc & the /scannow)

Note: You may be requested to insert your XP Disc, so have it ready.

Tried that. Doesn't remove it but pretends like it's gone best I can guess.

Don't have an XP disc so that idea is out.

Tried this but i get an error loading setupwbv.dll. It says it can't be found. Could this be the problem?

O.K. I've made a bit of progress. I can now get it to go to URL's typed in to the address bar but it opens them in a new window. I did this by changing the file association for URL: HTTP and the action Open to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" %1. I think this opens a new window because it's calling a new instance of ie but firefox does the same and it doesn't open in a new window so I don't know. I presume that by changing this to it's proper value it will open them in the same window. Does any one know what that value is?
Also whenever I connect to our intranet I get the connect to dialog box but when I tick the remeber password box it doesn't remeber it the next time I log on. Very annoying. Any ideas lads? Any help is much appreciated.
