    For Windows XP, try this:
If it's Windows XP Home, press F8 repeatedly during boot to bring up the Windows boot menu, and select Safe Mode.
At the welcome screen, log into the Administrator account.

If it’s Windows XP Professional, press CTRL+ALT+Delete twice, and type Administrator into the Username box.

    Once at the Desktop:

    Click Start and Control Panel
If in Category View, switch to Classic View by selecting the option on the left
    Open up User Accounts
Click on the User Account you want to access
    Click Change my password

If you booted into safe mode with Windows XP Home, reboot after changing the password.

I had to fix the same problem on a friends laptop last year.

I know a software to do this but , no offence to the original poster, but this software could be of great use to someone with a stolen laptop. Whats people opinion on this? Should i say it? I really wouldnt like to be helpin people who rob computers! If someone were to rob my laptop if they wanted the password they would ask the exact above question. And the safe mode way wouldnt work, as i password protected it. BTW Im not accusing the op of having a stolen laptop!!

(The software is a freeware, absolutely nothing to do with me)

PM the moderator MiCr0 for advise.

If the sw is available in stores I don't really see the harm as thieves can get it anyway.

In that case no - there would be copyright issues.
We'll see what the mod says.

I dont think it would be a good idea to post that software here. Maybe the op can google it.

You do not need software as such. if its just XP or 2k etc then boot up off any cd that has write access to an NTFS file system.. for example a bootable Linux cd like knoppix. find the SAM file (no extention) and rename it. restart into windows and administrator will have no password.

theres tonnes of them on the internet and can buy some in stores think even pc world sell them. Alot of them are under the gnu or whatever its called, the thing linux is under for free distribution. Friend of mine has been working on one of these and told me yesterday too try and worked for my 2003 server so pretty sure they'll work for anyone.
