    Does anyone know if a recording machine exists that will record cassette tapes to cd's or mp3's. I know there are computer programmes available but is there any actual recorders available?

    Yeah... I'm pretty sure philips, sony etc do them. My Dad has one. They basically do the same thing a computer would, they're just more straight forward and less versatile. It's easy enough to do though.

    I've done some mastering and clean up work for clients who had old cassette only masters that needed in digital format and on CD. Get the best quality cassette player you can, the best converters you can, record them into a good audio application and use your ears and the gear to get the desired results. It's surprisingly time intensive to do properly but once it's done it's done forever.

    Thanks to both of you for that.
    One question for frobisher , What do you mean by "the best converters ?".

    depending on how much you wanna pay, you can get these pc cassette dealy's. here is a link to one. they seem pretty sweet and fit into any spare 5 1/2 inch bay on your pc:

    i think dabs.ie sell them. not sure though...

    Analogue/Digital converters for transferring your signal from the analogue domain on the cassette tape into the digital domain in the computer with the greatest amount of sonic fidelity and detail.

    Thread resuscitation alert :D

    Does anyone know of anywhere in the Dublin area that provides a professional service to copy/transfer a cassette tape to CD; or even better, to mp3 files?

    I've about fourteen tapes of music (commercially produced) that I need to get transferred, ideally into mp3 files, though CDs will do.

    Any pointers towards companies/individuals that provides such a service, and the potential cost, is appreciated.

    Cheers. . .

    J

    Yea it's a fairly standard job!

    I used to pick some extra cash when studying in STC by doing this sort of work.

    MD -> CD|
    |---> Mp3 etc...
    Tape -> CD|

    If you're stuck I can help you out but Damaged knows his stuff. PM him

    probably this

    http://www.ionaudio.com/tape2pc

    absolute pile of ****e :pac: - nearly as bad as those "vinyl-to-mp3" gadgets.

    if you're gonna do it (and you care about your sonic fidelity), do it properly. use a quality cassette player or vinyl deck.

    That's the one and handy to know it's not worth the purchase .Cheers .

    there's a unit listed in yesterday's (07/01/09) Irish Times 'reader offer' magazine on page 3.

    €210 for the 'complete music system' that will do cassette tapes and LPs, 45s, CDs and radio direct to flash drive.

    looks like an old style combo unit.

    can't say what the quality would be like.

    I transferred much of my old vinyl to CD/mp3 many years ago using cables and cool edit. time consuming but good fun. not worth doing if it's regular stuff you could buy/download anyway, imo.
