Edges ALWAYS missing off picture

No matter what setting I put on my widescreen tv (4:3, 16:9, Auto, Cinema, Subtitle) there is always some area of the picture cut off the screen. This is particularly annoying when watching sports as the clock disappears or the team lineups are obscured.

Back in the old days when we all had simple square tvs everything used to fit on the screen, it wasn't broken then so why was it fixed. Having people stretched across the screen with fat heads isn't my idea of progress.

Any ideas on how I can see the full picture (other than time warp back to 1982)
