Em, join a soc or club. Play pool, that's about it in the college itself. Otherwise knock around tallaght...

As for number, the college fluctuates between 2000 and 2500 full time students, with an extra 1000 or so part-timers you'll have zero contact with..

what's the student council thingie like?

    As in the Students Union?

You'd probably get a different response from every student. I think it has the potential to be good, but it's been lacking a bit lately.

As for who's fault this is, well, it's everyones. Both the people running the Union on a day to day basis, and the student body for not demanding better of those people. Anytime I hear someone moaning about the Union, I ask what they've done to change it and I usually get "oh, I don't want to get involved, I just want it better in XYZ way".

As for the people running the day-to-day stuff, I've been one and it's hard to motivate yourself when you get little to no response from the people you supposedly represent. I tried in a million different ways to try and get involvement from the average student in the corridor, but frankly the only time someone wants to get involved is in one of two ways -

    (A) When they have a serious problem, (nabbed cheating or whatever)

    (B) When they want to complain, usually about something you tried and had to give up due to lack of interest or the always entertaining getting given out to because you HAVE done something and it's not good enough. Oh they've no suggestions on how to make it better, but it's just not good enough. For instance, I once remember an Officer getting given out to because they "didn't publicise" some event well enough. The officer retorted that they had plastered the college in posters (they had) and the person giving out said "I don't want to look at posters".

You won't get much done that way, but that's just my 2 cent.

I'd like to be on the students' union ... a more active role than I had in school would be fun!
it's all about sports down here which is crap!
and if there's nothing to do,we'll find something!

Thanks so much for your help,by the way!

    what about the people,in general?
    are they nice?
I'm quite worried everything's going to be like it was when I was in first year and it's all intimidating!
I just hope people are forthcoming!

Well, if you want to be involved in the SU, you have a few choices.

First of all, every Full-Time student is a member, so that's that out of the way. ;)

So, as for active involvement, you can either be a class rep, which involves going to a council meeting every so often, being a point of contact for your class, as well as sitting on a few college committees.

The next step is a Part-time officer. Currently these are 2 Entertainments Officers - Organising Parties, A Clubs & Societies Officer - Helping out with Clubs & Societies, and finally an Equality Officer - Suppose to help stamp out inequalities within the college.

Course, if you're totally off your rocker, like I was, you can be a Full-Time Officer. This involves taking a full 12 months off college and literally working for the Union. You get paid, ~€350 a week when I was there. There are 3 positions, President, Education Officer & Welfare Officer.

The Officers (Full & Part-Time) are elected by the student body at the end of every year, so you've missed those elections, but the class reps are usually elected within 2-3 weeks of the start of the semester.

As for the "people in general" it's what you'd expect in a building of 2,500. There are sound people, idiots and everything in between! I wouldn't worry about it, you're bound to find someone you like, that's what freshers week is for after all.
