The KB831167 update for IE6 Sp1

I use Windows 2000 Professional SP4 and get these regular updates. On Thursday evening the KB831167 one was downloaded and installed. No problem there then. However, within seconds of it being "sucessfully updated" the little update icon appeared on my Taskbar again. This has been continually happening since. I install it and within seconds, it asks to be installed again. It doesn't ask to restart the machine, as some do, but I tried that to see would that make it go away, but it didn't. I rarely use IE6 nowadays, sticking to Firefox. I've opened IE6 and did the install while it was running, to see would that make a difference, but it didn't. I've even tried running the update from the microsoft website itself, at the link above, and when I did it told me that it required "This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 to be installed", even when I used IE6 SP1 to access the site.

I am ignoring it now, but it is still there, waiting to be installed again and I am wondering has this been happening to anyone else? I did a Spybot S&D check and cleared all it gave me, and the update itself seems to be legit, so it is a bit strange why it keeps re-appearing seconds after it is, apparently, installed. I've not seen that happen with any automatic updates I've ever done. It's not a problem, but unusual. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Yes I recall this problem of the recurring update but do not remember the solution, maybe someone else will.

However an easy workaround is to hide the update, click the yellow shield and select custom then untick the update and it will say are you sure you want to hide the update etc. This can also be done by going to windows update and ticking the hide this update box, it wont bother you again after this.

I recall a similar situation with XP not too long ago & I think Microsoft said to install it once then ignore it & it will eventually sort itself out. I know with XP it did do just that in the end. Maybe your situation is the same?

Run it through Google, Tech Support Forum, or Microsoft Support.
I have had similar problems with W2000, cannot say which update.
I got great help from the Internet, free, involved downloading and reinstalling some component, but it solved it. Amazing that there are folks beavering away sorting out glitches on OS's some of which are coming to the end of their time.
Wait till the "Custom" command in Windows/Microsoft Update fails to deliver! I found a utility "Dial-a-fix" Sounds like "Dynarod" which sorted it.
These things pass away a night put are usually fixable, the solutions being there somewher.
