    As described here? Any recommendations?

Mods, I know I shouldn't duplicate posts in two forums, but as I need to make a decision in the next 48 hours, any chance you could maybe lock this and let it sit here until Sunday evening, then delete it? More through traffic and all that... :)

    Have a look at dabs.ie

They have a Toshiba laptop for 607.52 incl vat but delivery will be extra.
Seems a basic machine and should meet most needs

    Toshiba L30-105

Aldi had a nice one last thursday, but there was a great demand than they could supply......

If you want to stick locally try Dell, they have a decent 1501 model which comes in for around 680 depending on your requirements.

Cheers, Connrang, will browse dabs.ie, hadn't thought of there. That Toshiba looks good for the price all right, but I was thinking a 17" display would be nice — as I said, it's going to be used a lot for watching movies and DivX TV episodes. Also, the other Toshiba I linked to from laptopsdirect.ie has a Core Duo rather than Dual Core processor, which I believe is a Good Thing (?) Same applies to the Dell 5101 vs the 9400.

I can/I 'have to' spend up to €950/1000; I suppose my question is really what's the best machine I can get for that money? :)

A Dual Core is a broad description of what type of processor it has.

That one in particular has a "Core Duo" which is intel's previous generation of laptop dual core processor. A "Core 2 Duo" would be even better.

But realistically with laptops in this price range you're looking for something nice that won't fall apart with a Gig of ram. Everything else is fairly secondary.

Check out the DELL outlet web site www.dell.ie/outlet

I have picked up a couple of DELL 6400s for relatives in the past and they ended up less than €820. They have the same warranty, etc as the main online shop but as they are prebuilt you cant customise.

I think they are good kit at good prices but it really depends on what they have at the time and whether or not they meet your needs.

Check out the dell outlet on ebay, could find yourselve a little 'beast' for a bargain there. Make sure though you check the normal outlet and dell sites first so you have an idea how much they cost because although you can get a bargain sometimes it can back fire as in all auctions have your max and dont go past it, they update nearly daily so you might have to be patient.

Dont have the link sorry but it should be here somewhere

Edit: http://stores.ebay.ie/Dell-Outlet_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm . Check out the item description although Limerick aint a nice place IRAN it aint

Or even Iraq? ;) (guy probably just slipped up choosing the country from the drop-down list. Let's hope he doesn't assemble components...)

Ta for the tips so far, guys — one more noob question, while I'm at it?

Comparing 6400s on the Outlet site — and on reflection, I don't really need a 17" display which will be bigger, heavier, and batttery-munching — I see a couple of them pretty much identical, except that one has '256MB Video Graphic Card G72' and the others tend to have 'Intel Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 256MB shared graphics'. I presume that for things like video editing (and maybe even the occasional game, if my own 'response times' are up to it), a separate graphics card is preferable to shared?

Edit: the Dell outlet checkout page has just asked me
Q4. Will the product(s) be used in connection with weapons of mass destruction, i.e. nuclear applications, missile technology, or chemical or biological weapons purposes?
    :D:D:D

dell outlet on ebay is class, I got a laptop for about 970 which would have been over 2000 on their normal site, full warranty, 2 hairline scratches on the outside everything else perfect, all brand new packaged labels cds etc. If I had paid full whack I wouldnt have even bothered complaining about the scratches they were that small

This is true and when comparing prices be sure to go to checkout on the regular site to get the real cost, i.e. with VAT & delivery etc.

tick yes, they give a 5% discount to terrorists and throw in a dell-detonator

Someone said to me lately actually that www.laptopsdirect.ie has some good deals at the moment, might be worth looking there.
