On the Dell website i seen this software that will transfer all you're existing files from you're old PC to you're new PC or Laptop and will totally wipe clean everything on you're old PC's hard drive as well which is what ill be looking to get in a month or two when i hopefully get the new laptop.

I've gone looking again on the Dell website and unless im missing something but i cant see it on there any more, was wondering if someone knows what the name of this software is (or if they can recommend similar software)

    cheers

Windows has this facility built in, so I don't think you need anything extra. This will do a good job of transferring documents, settings, etc. This is done via a network connection (you will need a crossover cable if you don't have a hub or switch).

Personally I like to keep my new computer clean, and don't see the point in importing ALL my old crap. Instead, I back up everything to a CD/ DVD/ Flash drive/ external hard disk, and manually copy ,from the backup copy, just what I need to the new system. If you decide this is for you, don't forget to export your web browser favourites and backup your email data and settings. Backup your entire 'document and settings' just in case.

As for deleteing the old system, boot the install cd, delete any partitions and re format. This should be enough, unless you're worried about someone recovering old data..

Thing is i cant back up anything onto a CD or DVD as my PC isn't compatible, i haven't really got the patience for all that id sooner just get software that does it in a few hours and that'll be that, obviously id want the old PC's HD wiped as someone else would have it and i wouldn't want them possibly recovering any old data.

But id want to export everything i have on my current PC to the new laptop when i get it,ll music, files, web browsers, etc, etc, etc the lot.

I take it that you don't have a cd/dvd recorder, fair enough.

If you can, a manual backup is still useful to have - just in case. Do you have an ethernet (network) socket on you PC? If not, make sure that the transfer software comes with a USB cable.

To wipe your data beyond reasonable recovery, you'll need something like this to run AFTER YOU BACKUP EVERYTHING!! (it's free) - http://dban.sourceforge.net/

It's likely that the transfer software will simply delete files, this does not mean that they can't be undeleted so be careful if it's sensitive data...
