My mp3 player is a bit wrecked, i keep getting little skips and jumps in the songs like a scratched CD. I formatted the drive and put the music back on but it didnt work.

So i tried to scan the drive for errors. I have tried scanning my mp3 player through Windows Vista with windows disk error checking thing but it just stops and goes of after a few seconds. Is there a free different scanning program i could use to check for errors?
Or anything else which may be causing the problem?

    Its a cowan iaudio X5

Could the scanning problems be an indication the drive itself is defective ?

If you formatted it already then it's unlikely to be a file system error which is what those disk scan tools can fix. A bad sector on the HD can't be corrected by software.

I'd try emailing cowan tech support to see what they say & ask on their forums.

I already asked over on iaudiophile and never got a reply!

One thing to note is some files are called weird things like the placebo folder is "%$plac%bo and kings of leon is $king^s(of leon&n

I wasnt having these problems till i connected it and moved music through vista

Interesting that might indicate some sort of IO corruption perhaps is the reason why though bad HD is still valid too.

As for reasons well could be driver related, what make chipset is your motherboard ?

Actually when I was moving the music, "I/O error" appeared on the screen for a couple of albums and I cancelled them albums.

I dont think its the computers fault as i've used my home PC and Laptop to load the music from.

Im sure it will be this I/O error thing but I dont know what that is or how to correct it

I/O errors are how to describe this low level corruption in other words as the data passes around your system through the interface(s) that is corrupted the data itself is also corrupted.

This manifests itself as the error in the audio and the file names, though system wide I/O corruption could be damaging all your personal data as well for instance any time you open, copy it etc.

As for the cause well it could be bad RAM, test the system with Memtest+ and see if it logs an errors, ImgBurn will burn the boot ISO to CD.

It could be the USB controller is defective and or driver problem. or it could be the USB cable is defective, it could be the USB controller on the Cowon player is defective.

It could be your own HD and driver causing the I/O corruption and as the data passes out onto the USB to the player it is corrupted. NVIDIA chipsets are particularly susceptible to I/O corruption with certain hardware and software combinations.

If the problem happens on both laptop & PC and you have replaced the cable for the Cowon audio player then the likely hood the USB interface on the player is damaged and that is something you cannot fix yourself, the player would have to be replaced.
