I am having a problem with Word. The spell check and dictionaries do not work. I have tried to assign a dictionary (through Preferences) but have not been able to get any to work. The notice comes up to tell that "Spell checking is complete" even though a document may have errors or words in Irish. I have tried a re-install and also updates. Can anyone shed any light on this please.

I assume that Spell check and grammar check are turned on in preferences?

When the Custom dictionary is selected under that preferences tab make sure that a language is chosen (English (UK) or something).

I've had this problem with Office 2004 since I installed it and so far have been unable to fix it although I have found a workaround.

If I open a document that was created on another computer Word recognises the language straight away and spellchecks it fine. But if I create a new document it says it doesn't know the language.

Create a new document and type a few words on to the page and select them all.

Next click Tools > Language... scroll down to English (UK) and click Ok.
Click the Default... Button on the same window and tell Word this is the default language from now on.

From then on the spell checker will work for that document.

As far as I can figure, Word auto detects the language from the Keyboard and the International settings of the machine but seems to have a problem sometimes determining what country the Keyboard is set for. Maybe tinkering with the International or ASCII/Unicode settings might throw up something - please let us know if you sort it.

I didn't have this problem with Office X.v

This was posted recently and I posted this fix that worked for everyone that tried it:

I had this problem a couple of years ago and it seems to stem from having your nice little Irish Tri-Colour displayed in the International section/Menu Bar. I rang Microsoft at the time as the spell checker did not work and all subsequent updates have failed to rectify the problem. So here's the fix they recommended that did the trick. Firstly quit Word, then go in to System Preferences and select 'International' unclick the box that is checked beside the 'Irish' flag and you will need to click the box beside the 'British' flag. If you do not want to display the Union Jack in your menu bar, you can choose to unclick the option at the base of the window that says 'Show input menu in menu bar'. Then you need to go in to 'Language' and select 'Edit List' you need to select 'British English' AND 'English'. Tick them both and click 'OK' then drag 'British English' to the top of the list. Open a new Word document and see if the spell checker works. There is no point opening an old document as it going to memorise the old regime. That worked for me and I have performed this action on several machines, Mac Book Pro, a 2004 iMac an a 2006 Intel Mac and it has solved the problem on all of them. I think the machines get confused by being called Irish but are expected to think in English.....sounds a bit like this messed up country we live in Let's know if it does the trick!

Will try suggestions and see if any success. My wife works through the Irish language and sometimes needs the Fada. Many thanks for your suggestions.
