I was looking at this lens, it's one my buddy uses for alot of gig stuff. I only have the 18-55 kit lens I got with my digital rebel at the moment, so would this be a good buy?

By all accounts if it is for the Canon digital 300, 350 or 400 most of the reviews I've read say that it's worthwhile having it. Check on ebay to get some kind of a price guide.

But...If you can afford the extra 300 and a bit, go for the 1.4 version, much better build quality, autofocus and general image quality.

Or the 1.2L if you're loaded, and if you're really, really loaded, go for the 1.0.

The 50mm 1.8 (the "nifty fifty") is a cracker of a lens. Tack sharp and great colour rendition. Ideal for portraits. Best Canon value by a mile. Buy one now.

I'll third that. Mine broke in half recently when I dropped it, but I'll be replacing it the very next time I'm in the US, as the cost there converts to about 60 Eur - great value, great lense !

buy it if you need a fixed focal length lens that allows low light photography with a narrow depth of field.

if you don't need those capabilities, don't buy it

Best € value lens on the market. No need to go US/Far East as it's only 80-90 Euros in europe.

Don't agree with last comment as it's tack sharp through most of the aperatures. Far more than just a "low light" lens and beats hands down a lot of much more expensive options.

I bought mine about 3 weeks ago, I'm seriously impressed with the images, but not impressed by the Autofocus.

The trick with the autofocus is it works best at one focus point to get most out of the lens. I don't find it slow then and sharp as hell.

Without a shadow of a doubt, get it. I think it's irreplaceable for gig photography (except maybe by it's bigger-apertured brothers).

I agree with Covey above re: focus. Just set the camera to focus on a certain focus point, autofocus, then recompose

There's plenty of photos I've taken with it here.

i love mine, it's indispensable for indoor shots (i won't ever use flash) and great for anything with a shallow depth of field.
    it's very nice.

The best lens ever.....pound per pound. Manual focus is a dying art ;-)

Get it and enjoy it. The lens can be bought for €60 in some parts of the world. So, don't pay too much for it.
