Any experience renting abroad?

    Hi lads,

    I'm planning to do some touring for 2 or maybe 3 weeks towards the end of the Summer in Italy. I am trying to decide whether to bring my own bike on ferry and then ride or get a train (with bike) to Milan... OR... fly cheap to Milan and rent a bike for the 2 weeks.

    My girlfriend is coming as passanger. We took the ferry to Cherbourg last year and travelled around Northern France, Belgium and Holland for 2 weeks. Great trip but we'd rather keep the mileage to a minimum this time and relax & see plenty. That's why I'm leaning more towards the rental option now.

    I have done some research on the rental prices and I am probably looking at a cost of about 1000-1200 all-in for the 2 weeks for a limited daily mileage package.
    The ferry cost is about 500-600 plus petrol/tolls all the way to Milan or an astronomical train ticket charge for 2+bike. Not to mention losing 2-3 days tiring/stressful travel time either end of the trip.

    So, has anyone rented in Southern France or Italy? If so, how did you get on, how much did it cost and can you recommend anyone?
    Or has anyone gotten trains in France with their bike? If so, how much did that cost?
    Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

    Ok, I'm heading off next Monday so thought I'd have bring this thread out of hibernation. Trip has been cut a little shorter at this stage. I'm now looking at renting a bike in Milan for 8 days. Anybody done this before in Italy? Can you recommend a rental agency? Any other tips?
