Any DIY NCT repairs I can do?

    Hi

Just looking back over a few NCT related threads I see the best way to do it is not to bother with a pre nct test at all and just repair the list of problems they print out when it fails.

Are there any tips on work I can do on it myself in order to minimise the amount of faults they find?

The lhs back door doesn't open. Will they fail me for this?

    Thanks.:D

    Don't fix what aint broke.

Put it through the NCT and see what it fails on, then attempt to repair those faults

I don't know what the story would be with the door, I'll leave that for someone else who knows for sure, but there are plenty of things you can check yourself:
Lights and lenses working and undamaged,
    Fluids up to correct levels,
Wipers and washers working and undamaged,
Legal tread on tyres, and visibly undamaged,
    All paperwork in order,
Legal numberplate for age of vehicle,
Driver's seat undamaged and all seatbelts present and correct,
Mirrors and windows in good order.

I'm sure others will come up with plenty more.

Don't forget to check the spare tire.
I found mine was flat last time I was bringing a car in for NCT.

A few squirts of engine cleaner with your next fill-up wouldn't go amiss if you were worried about emissions.

get your headlights aligned in a garage before you go for the test - it'll only cost around €20 (we get a lot of nct failures for this reason alone)

I'm pretty sure they'll fail you on the back door - have a look at ncts.ie to get a better idea of what'll be scrutinized!

Yes, you will fail on the door.
    Reasons for failure
    (1) A door missing.
    (2) Door cannot be shut or opened normally or is liable to open
    on its own.
    (3) Insecure receivers or catch.

Easy things to check before the test
-all bulbs, don't forget the number plate illumination
-any small blows in the exhaust fill them with exhaust putty
-the spare wheel is not part of the test so can be taken out
-check back over previous NCT reports if you have them. If something was borderline the last time chances are it will fail this time
    -wipers
-washers should be aimed properly with all the jets working
-no harm before the test to change plugs, filters and oil. And try to have the engine well warmed up before going in for the test
