Breaking down in rush hour traffic...

This morning on my way to work I was just thinking "what would I do now this morning if I broke down because I have no credit in my phone".

Then I realised ... well, I don't actually have a number of any breakdown service or anything anyway. Im going to compile a few names and numbers and leave it in my car.

Im curious though about AA, RAC. Is there any more of these companies?
Anyways are they worth it really or are they just for lady drivers et cetera who must have that sense of security?

edit: I know I could ring 11850 but it would be handier (and cheaper most definitely) to just have the number.

Well im happy with my insuarance company.I would never pay any company like AA etc.
I have called hibernian afew times as my last car broke down and needed to get keys out of my car which i locked :(

They arrived in less than 30 mins and everything was done FREE OF CHARGE, so why would people pay AA or RAC

What do you mean for 'lady drivers'!! On one habd you are saying you would have to phone someone, but on the other you are making out that its only ladys that need helping in a car breakdown situation? if you are enquiring about these companies, its obvious that you would be the same as any person who would not know what to do if they broke down!

Well I meant AA being a reliable company that you can trust for that sense of security as opposed to a fella in a garage that might be an hour or two late.

Some people would be willing to pay for this sense of security (many lady drivers im sure among others of course).

I don't think id be willing to pay for it but im curious to see what there like. Perhaps I could be persuaded!

I've found the AA great over the last two years, and I've been driving classics. They've always arrived in good time, and either fixed the problem or provided a flat-bed (important for old cars) to bring the car home. Haven't had a problem with any of their guys.

Got separate breakdown cover with my insurance this year but will keep AA membership anyway.

Hibernian offer a roadside assist free of charge so I wouldn't dream of paying the AA.

If you have a pay-as-you-go mobile from Vodafone, I would recommend you store the number 50223 under "IOU" in your phonebook.
    http://www.vodafone.ie/readytogo/tariffs/iou/index.jsp

Use it for emergencies only, as you can only get one IOU per topup. :)

More important is to keep your bloody phone charged up!

I've crashed once, had a car break down once, and a bike almost run out of petrol once :o

All three times my phone was low enough on battery that I couldn't make a call. Usually my phone would be fully charged up...

What's the Hibernian assist number? I'm with them but haven't had to ring them (so far).

Indeedy lst Thursday I got stranded for several hours 100 miles from home
I had added 10 euro to my phone credit the previous evening and charged it up fully. I got home at 9.45 pm, having come to a halt at about 2.

    Mike.

A biker ran into me a couple of years ago, the car was so bad that it couldn't be driven. It was a company car so the lease company sent a tow truck. 4 hours I was waiting (called them at 3pm and they arrived at 7pm) Irish towing service was the company that the lease crowd sent. Wouldn't be too pushed on using them.

Derek Behan is quite good, based in Kilmainham in Dublin 8, reasonable and the guys on the trucks are quite good

In the car, my first order of business would be to push it the hell out the road. Then get the bonnet up and the manual out and if nobody appears to help me then I'll phone a friend and get them to look up the golden pages for somebody nearby.

If I'm on the bike, I'll hang around beside it for half an hour looking sad and six or so other bikers will stop and help me fix it. I can also call other bikers I know and get instructions on how to fix it. Failing all of that I'll push it to some other bikers gaff or somebody will arrive with a van and take me to a garage. Friendly lot bikers. =]

Same here. AA has given me a 100% fix rate over the years and they are very courteous and professional and the longest I ever had to wait for them was less than an hour
