Swapping hard disks

My hard disk is on it's last legs. I want to do a backup including the system state, put in a new drive and do a restore.

I can't get the exact model again, but can get a close match of the same make. Is "close" enough for the system state restore or would the new drive have to be an exact match?

    It's an Hitachi drive.

Make or model should not matter. Just ghost the dying hard drive and off you go.

Can you ghost back to a different hard drive?

Would there be any compatibility issues restoring the system state back to a differecnt disk? I can imagine a BSOD....

If the only thing changed in the system was the HD, then ghosting an image back will work fine. You only run into problems when ghosting back an image that had a different motherboard than before.

If you use a utility like Ghost or Drive Magic you should be OK.

Should be. I've had problems with these in the past. Windows has a backup and restore "personal settings" feature that you should use first. It won't (I believe) save your applications. As a precaution, use that feature of the Windows Backup program. If you have to do a whole re-install because of disaster you can restore your personal settings.

Run your Ghost (the better program) to copy from the original to any similar (preferably larger drive), modifing your partition so that you use all the new drive at the same time, and physically install the new hard drive.

Under normal circumstances, this should be it.

(I presume you know about master and slave jumpers?)
