Seems to be a shortage of decent restaurants - or maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

    2 distinct catgories here:

    a) Evening meal, couplesy type thing

    b) Lunch, bring the kids

Been to the Lavey Inn which was grand for lunch, lovely staff and accomadated my vegetarian tastes without any fuss at all.

Also been to the Setanta Restaurant at the Slieve Russell hotel. That's a bit of a style over susbstance to be honest. Food looks great but you're not given enough of it and the fecking neon lights in the place are just annoying and really unsuitable. Expensive for what you get really.

Any one else got some first hand tales to tell?

There's a website i found www.findarestaurant.ie and you may find s.th there for cavan... it seems easy to use and it is trying to cover the country.

The Meadow View is a handy place to head with the kids in the evenings theres plenty of space for them to move about without getting in other customers way.
The food is good and plenty of it. Be careful not to clash with a local football match though as it can get quite busy.

Reynard's resturant in the Errigal Hotel, Cootehill does some great food. Brought my family there a few weeks ago and I have to say, it is in my opinion, flawless.

Most of the places listed on findaresturant.ie do some good food too. I had a meal in the Lakeside Manor after a league final two years ago and it was very nice I have to say.

    I know, I know. :P

Nope, no bands in the Sail Inn any more really. Although I think it may be changing hands soon so the new tenants may bring some bands to the place. O'Mahoney's and Troy's (Shercock House) are the main places for bands nowadays. There was a great band in O'Mahoney's this past few bank holidays, Odd Time I think they were called. They were only a cover band but my did they get the place jumping!

Planet Earth in Bailieboro is great for lunch, didn't have a good experience in McNeans - we were given the option of pasta or risotto for vegetarians, both were very poor.

the woodbine in virginia is really good and has both and bar menu which is perfect for lunches/family dinner etc, whereas as the restuarant upstairs has quite a menu to choose from.

the woodbine also opened in ballyjamesduff last night, same menu, same staff so should be a good addition to the town,

The cafe opposite Sloweys Hardware in Ballyjamesduff has gone downhill something shocking in the last few months. Used to have a big menu and really had their act together.....got a greasy A4 photocopy with little or no choice beyond Full Irish Breakfast handed to me on it on my last visit. No egg mayonaise in their salad bar and staff seemingly away with the fairies. Better off staying at home really.

I was in Cavan this weekend for a family get together, and couldn't get over how many new restaurants there are in the town! I'm not sure where they demand will come from for them all, but we went to a place called Dee Cee's on Main St and had a super meal. The Black Horse Inn has a place behind the bar, the Oak Room is upstairs from a new pub beside Easons, and there is the Side Door at the Orchard Pub and the restaurant at the Cavan Crystal Hotel, along with a few Chinese places, and the Italian spot, Little Sicily. And my sister mentioned a couple of other places, so there is no shortage in Cavan Town anyway.
